14. The Portion Completed — Resurrection, Inheritance, and Presence#

The study began with a portion question. Jesus told Peter that without His washing he would have no part with Him. Numbers 18 then disclosed a priestly inheritance unlike an ordinary territorial allotment: “I am thy part and thine inheritance.” Jubilee established that the land itself remained under God’s ownership. The inheritance lines of Israel were preserved, divided, and finally gathered under the promised King and Priest. The Servant called Israel restores Israel and carries salvation to the nations. The Son brings heirs near, gives access through His priesthood, and by the Spirit builds a living house in which God dwells.

Revelation does not replace those earlier lines with a new subject. It gathers them. Portion, resurrection, holiness, priesthood, reign, inheritance, sonship, Temple, glory, nations, life, the removal of the curse, Face, Name, service, and everlasting rule appear together. The end of Scripture is therefore not merely the last event in the sequence. It is the place where the earlier structures can finally be seen together.

14.1 Meros in the First Resurrection#

The final major occurrence of the study’s target word does not return merely to land or ordinary possession. Revelation places meros at the resurrection horizon.

Revelation 20:6

Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

The word translated “part” is meros. In one verse the portion language reaches resurrection, holiness, freedom from the second death, priesthood, and reign. The study does not need to settle every chronological dispute surrounding the millennium in order to hear the lexical witness. Meros has reached beyond a returned field, a tribal allotment, or even present participation in the body. The share now stands in resurrection life.

This also closes a loop opened near the beginning. Humanity was created for image-bearing life and delegated dominion under God. Revelation does not end with redeemed humanity becoming autonomous rulers. Those with this resurrection portion are priests of God and of Christ, and they reign with Him. The throne remains His; the reign is participated in beneath the King.

14.2 The Inheritance with God#

Revelation 21:1–4

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

The inheritance is not an escape from creation. John sees a new heaven and a new earth, a city coming down from God, and the dwelling of God with humanity. The movement that began with Edenic fellowship, tabernacle, Temple, prophetic promise, the incarnate Son, Spirit indwelling, and a living spiritual house now reaches an openly shared dwelling: God Himself is with His people.

Revelation 21:6–8

And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Revelation places the positive inheritance before the negative meros. The thirsty receive the water of life freely. The overcomer inherits. The covenantal relationship is explicit: “I will be his God, and he shall be my son.” Then verse 8 uses meros for the contrary portion in the second death. The final contrast is therefore not merely between two locations. It is between inheritance with God and a portion severed from that life.

The warning does not require theatrical accusation. The same Scripture that speaks of judgment also speaks of thirst, gift, invitation, faith, cleansing, repentance, and overcoming. The force of the final meros is that God’s appointed provision and God’s final inheritance are not morally empty abstractions. Portion remains bound to relationship, response, and the character of the One who gives.

14.3 God and the Lamb Are the Temple#

Revelation 21:22–26

And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.

And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.

And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.

And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.

And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.

Earlier Scripture called Christ the Living Stone and believers living stones. Paul described the people of God as a building growing into a holy temple, “builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.” Revelation can therefore say both that God has built a living dwelling and that the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the Temple. The statements do not compete.

A temple is named as a whole without requiring every stone, beam, curtain, furnishing, or structural member to be separately named whenever the temple is mentioned. In the greater biblical architecture, the redeemed truly are living components of the dwelling God builds, while God and the Lamb remain the defining Presence by which the whole dwelling is holy. The components never become the One who inhabits and defines the house.

The nations also remain visible. Earlier, Abraham received a promise involving a nation and blessing to the nations. The Servant called Israel restores Israel and carries salvation outward. Wild branches are grafted into a root they did not create. The far-off are made near and enter one household. Revelation does not erase the nations at the end; the nations walk in the light supplied by God and the Lamb. Unity has not required erasure.

14.4 The River, the Tree, the Face, and the Name#

Revelation 22:1–5

And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:

And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.

And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

The river proceeds from the throne. The servants do not become the Headwater. The tree gives life-giving fruit; the nations receive healing. The curse is gone. The servants serve. The Face is seen. The Name is borne. God gives the light. The servants reign, but the throne remains “the throne of God and of the Lamb.” Every gift retains its Source.

This is where the priestly blessing of Numbers 6 reaches its permanent horizon. The Face once invoked in blessing is seen. The Name once placed upon the covenant people is borne. Peace no longer exists inside a creation still threatened by death and curse; the curse itself is gone. The language of glory in John 17 and the transformation language of Romans 8 and 2 Corinthians 3 now stand beside a final world in which God gives the light and His servants live in that light.

Revelation 22:17

And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

The book closes with invitation as well as consummation. The water of life is not self-generated possession. It is given. The thirsty come. The final city therefore preserves the same order seen throughout the study: God owns, God gives, God calls, God cleanses, God brings near, God indwells, God forms, God glorifies, and God remains the Source at the center of the inheritance.

14.5 The Loops Close#

The closing vision becomes dense because the vocabulary is no longer new. Each final image reaches backward into a line already established.

PORTION LOOP: “NO PART WITH ME” → YHWH AS PRIESTLY PORTION → SHARE IN THE INHERITANCE → EVERY MEROS WORKING UNDER THE HEAD → MEROS IN RESURRECTION / FINAL DESTINY.

INHERITANCE LOOP: LAND → JUBILEE → PRESERVED TRIBAL INHERITANCE → PRIESTLY DEATH AND RETURN TO POSSESSION → ETERNAL INHERITANCE → HEIRS IN CHRIST → NEW CREATION.

PRIESTHOOD LOOP: LEVI → YHWH AS PORTION → MELCHIZEDEK PRIEST-KING → ACCESS → ROYAL PRIESTHOOD → PRIESTS OF GOD AND CHRIST WHO REIGN WITH HIM.

DWELLING LOOP: SANCTUARY / TABERNACLE → SPIRIT WITHIN → HOUSEHOLD / TEMPLE → LIVING STONES → DIVINE ABODE → GOD DWELLS WITH HUMANITY → GOD AND LAMB ARE THE TEMPLE.

IMAGE / VOCATION LOOP: IMAGE → BLESSING → FRUITFULNESS → DOMINION → CONFORMITY TO THE SON → BESTOWED GLORY → FACE → NAME → SERVICE → REIGN.

The land was real. The tribal inheritances were real. Jubilee was real. Levi’s priestly calling was real. The city of refuge was real. The Temple was real. Israel and the nations are real. None of these must be dissolved in order for the later fulfillment to be greater than the earlier form.

The larger inheritance is not obtained by declaring the earlier gifts meaningless. Scripture carries their categories forward. Possession becomes eternal inheritance. Priesthood reaches the sworn Priest-King. Access becomes habitation. Household becomes living temple. Image-bearing moves toward conformity to the Son. Blessing moves outward to nations. Dominion becomes reign beneath the throne. The final city contains creation, people, nations, life, service, and government — but God remains at the center of them all.

The priestly declaration therefore becomes one of the study’s clearest windows into the end: “I am thy part and thine inheritance.” The final biblical inheritance is not merely a parcel returned to an owner. It is restored creation under the immediate Presence of God and the Lamb, where God’s children drink from His life, walk in His light, bear His Name, see His Face, serve before His throne, and reign under Him.

The study began with humanity made in the image of God for fruitful life and delegated rule. It closes with restored servants receiving life from the throne, bearing the Name of the One they serve, and reigning forever beneath the same throne. The Giver has never ceased to be the Source. The portion has not become independent possession. The inheritance has reached communion.
