Manasseh and the Restored Birthright
Foreknowledge, Predestination, and Manifold Wisdom
A discovery of adoption, inheritance, foreknown purpose, and the cross as the public spectacle of God's wisdom
Packet 18 - Foreknowledge, Predestination, and Manifold Wisdom#
The restored birthright pattern eventually reaches the New Testament language of foreknowledge, predestination, adoption, inheritance, and glory. These words should not be isolated from the long sequence that Scripture has already built. Reuben has forfeited. Joseph has received the birthright. Ephraim and Manasseh have been adopted into inheritance standing. Manasseh has preserved inheritance through the daughters. The refuge-city law has revealed that return to possession requires the death of the high priest. The Davidic line has carried the promise of the ruler. The priestly line has guarded the mechanism of death and return. The order of Melchizedek has held the promise of a Priest-King.
When Romans and Ephesians speak of God foreknowing, predestining, adopting, and giving inheritance, they are not introducing a disconnected idea. They are describing the end of a pathway God prepared beforehand. The legal architecture does not make the New Testament smaller. It makes the New Testament more wonderful, because the reader can see how many witnesses had to stand in sequence before the inheritance could be opened in Christ.
18.1 The Sequence Behind the New Testament Words#
The language of foreknowledge and predestination can become abstract when removed from the story. Scripture anchors these words in God's purpose in Christ. The end is conformity to the Son, adoption as heirs, and the praise of God's glory. The path is not random. The birthright has moved lawfully. The inheritance has been preserved lawfully. The bloodguilt problem has been answered lawfully. The heirs are sealed lawfully by the Spirit.
Isaiah 46:9-10
Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done...
The beginning and the end are not separate in God's counsel. The God who declares the end from the beginning is the same God who allows the beginning to contain witness markers of the end. The birthright is forfeited before the birthright is restored. The sons are adopted before adoption becomes New Covenant inheritance language. The daughters preserve inheritance before Mary carries the Davidic line bodily to Christ. The high priest must die before Hebrews reveals the eternal inheritance opened by death.
18.2 Romans 8: Foreknown, Predestined, Conformed, Glorified#
Romans 8 moves from suffering to glory, from groaning creation to the heirs who wait for adoption, and then to the purpose of God that cannot fail. The sequence is important. The Spirit bears witness with the spirit of the children of God. Those children are heirs. The heirs suffer with Christ and will be glorified together with Him.
Romans 8:15-17
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ...
The adoption language is not decorative. It belongs to inheritance. Jacob's adoption of Ephraim and Manasseh established inheritance standing inside Joseph's birthright. In Christ, adoption reaches its greater fulfillment: the heirs are received in the Son and made joint-heirs with Christ.
Romans 8:28-30
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
The end of predestination in Romans 8 is not an isolated decree detached from the inheritance story. The end is conformity to the image of His Son, so that Christ is the firstborn among many brethren. The firstborn language is crucial. Inheritance comes through the firstborn. Reuben forfeited the natural firstborn birthright. Joseph received the birthright. Manasseh, Joseph's firstborn, preserved inheritance. Christ rises as the true Firstborn who cannot forfeit, die again, or lose the inheritance.
The sequence in Romans is also a comfort: foreknown, predestined, called, justified, glorified. The inheritance God prepared is not left to chance. The pathway was arranged before the disruptions appeared, and the heirs are brought into the Son who fulfills the pathway.
18.3 Ephesians 1: Chosen, Predestined to Adoption, and Sealed unto Inheritance#
Ephesians 1 places predestination in a context of blessing, adoption, redemption, inheritance, and sealing by the Spirit. The language is not cold. It is covenantal and doxological. It is ordered toward the praise of God's glory.
Ephesians 1:4-5
According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will...
The destination named here is adoption. This matters because adoption has already appeared as a lawful inheritance mechanism. Jacob's adoption of Ephraim and Manasseh did not pretend they were unrelated to Joseph. It legally brought them into Jacob's inheritance standing as sons. In Christ, adoption does not erase creation or humanity; it restores heirship in the Son.
Ephesians 1:7-11
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ... In whom also we have obtained an inheritance...
The words wisdom, mystery, fulness of times, gather together, and inheritance belong together. God's wisdom is not merely that He gives an inheritance. His wisdom is that He gathers the broken, divided, forfeited, scattered, and endangered inheritance pathway into Christ without violating the legal witnesses He Himself established.
Ephesians 1:13-14
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation... ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
The Spirit is the earnest of inheritance. The inheritance opened by the death and resurrection of Christ is not left as an abstract title. The heirs receive the Spirit as pledge, seal, and living witness of the coming redemption of the purchased possession.
18.4 Ephesians 3: Manifold Wisdom Made Known Through the Church#
Ephesians 3 names the scale of what God has been doing. The mystery hidden in God is now made known. The church becomes the living display of God's manifold wisdom to principalities and powers. This fits the restored birthright pattern because the convergence is too complex to be accidental. Judah, Joseph, Ephraim, Manasseh, Levi, Benjamin, David, the daughters, the refuge cities, the high-priest death, and the Melchizedek order all converge in Christ.
Ephesians 3:8-11
Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God... To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord...
The word manifold is important. The wisdom is many-sided. It is not a single flat line. God's wisdom is displayed through layers: birthright, scepter, adoption, daughter-inheritance, priesthood, refuge, death, resurrection, Spirit, nations, and glory. The church becomes the evidence that the pieces have been gathered into one living body in Christ.
18.5 The Prepared Pathway: Forfeiture, Disruption, and Lawful Restoration#
The following statement summarizes the witness sequence and should stand as a central discovery point in this section:
This does not reduce foreknowledge to a bare awareness of future events. Nor does it turn predestination into a harsh abstraction. It reveals God's purpose as legal, covenantal, prophetic, and relational. God knows the end from the beginning, and He arranges the lawful pathway so that the end cannot be overturned by forfeiture, rebellion, inheritance crisis, or bloodguilt.
Reuben's defilement does not destroy the birthright. Joseph receives it. Joseph's birthright does not remain vague. Ephraim and Manasseh are adopted. Ephraim's later rebellion does not erase the fruitfulness and nations witness. Manasseh's inheritance crisis does not cut off the name. The daughters speak right, and God establishes a statute. Bloodguilt does not permanently bar return to possession. The high priest's death opens the way back. The Solomon-line complication does not cancel David's promise. Mary carries the David/Nathan line, and Joseph supplies legal reception and naming. Death does not defeat the Son. His death opens the testament, and His resurrection reveals Him as Firstborn and Heir.
18.6 Colossians 2: The Cross as the Spectacle of the Powers#
Ephesians 3 says the manifold wisdom of God is made known to principalities and powers. Colossians 2 shows the cross as the place where those powers are spoiled and publicly exposed. The cross is not merely the scene of suffering. It is the legal place where the accusation is answered, the debt is canceled, the priestly death occurs, the testament is opened, and the powers are put to shame.
Colossians 2:13-15
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
The cross answers more than one problem. It answers sin. It answers accusation. It answers bloodguilt. It answers exile from possession. It answers the inheritance that cannot open without death. It answers the powers that thought death would end the promised Son. Instead, by death the Testator opens the inheritance; by resurrection the Firstborn stands alive; by exaltation the Priest-King administers what His death released.
18.7 Closing Synthesis: Predestination as Witness Architecture#
Romans 8 and Ephesians 1 do not interrupt the restored birthright sequence. They complete its theological explanation. God foreknew the heirs, predestined them to be conformed to the image of His Son, predestined them unto adoption, gave them inheritance in Christ, and sealed them with the Spirit of promise. The purpose is not merely that individuals receive blessing, but that Christ be revealed as the Firstborn among many brethren and that the church display the manifold wisdom of God.
This is why the Old Testament sequence matters. The birthright had to be restored lawfully. The scepter and the birthright had to be reconciled. The inheritance had to be preserved from being cut off. The bloodguilty had to return to possession through priestly death. The adopted heirs had to be sealed by the Spirit. God prepared the legal and prophetic architecture beforehand so that the fulfillment in Christ would stand beyond human invention.
Romans 11:33-36
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.
The wisdom is deep because the pathway is deep. The sequence is witness. The complexity is a pillar. The heirs are not merely rescued from judgment; they are adopted into the Firstborn, sealed with the Spirit, conformed to the image of the Son, and brought toward glory. In Christ, the inheritance God prepared beforehand is opened, possessed, and displayed.
