The Signs of the Coming One
A discovery of prophetic witness, visible works, and the legal-public evidence of the Anointed One
Opening Witness#
The sequence has moved from priestly preparation to wilderness testing. Jesus has been washed in the waters of baptism, anointed by the Spirit, proclaimed by the Father, and tested in the wilderness. The next witness is public evidence. The Anointed One must not merely claim identity; His works must answer the prophets and testify that the promised visitation has arrived.
This is why John's question matters. From prison, John sends disciples to ask whether Jesus is the coming One. Jesus does not answer with bare assertion. He sends them back with what they hear and see: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor receive the gospel.
The signs are mercy, but they are more than mercy. They are prophetic witness. They are legal-public evidence that the one washed, anointed, proclaimed, and tested is the one promised by the Scriptures. The visible works create an aha moment: Isaiah's words are not distant poetry; they are unfolding in front of witnesses.
10.1 John's Question from Prison#
John had already witnessed Jesus at the Jordan. He had identified Him as the Lamb of God and had seen the Spirit remain upon Him. Yet the Gospel record also preserves John's later question from prison. That question becomes a doorway into the public evidence of Jesus' identity.
Matthew 11:2-3
Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
The question is direct: Art thou he that should come? The issue is not curiosity alone. It is identification. Is Jesus the expected One, the promised Anointed One, the One toward whom the prophetic witness has been moving?
10.2 Art Thou He That Should Come?#
The phrase he that should come gathers expectation. The prophets had spoken of a coming visitation of God, a coming King, a coming Servant, a coming messenger of good tidings, and a coming day when the blind, lame, deaf, poor, and oppressed would be touched by salvation.
Psalm 118:26
Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.
Malachi 3:1
Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.
John's ministry had prepared the way. Now John's disciples ask whether the One prepared for has truly come. Jesus' answer will not move away from the prophets; it will return the disciples to the prophetic evidence now visible in His works.
10.3 Jesus Answers with What Is Seen and Heard#
Matthew 11:4-6
Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
Jesus sends John's disciples back with evidence: hear and see. This is witness language. The report is not merely that Jesus is kind, though He is. The report is that the works attached to the promised visitation are now happening in public view.
Luke 7:21-23
And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
Luke adds that the answer is given in the same hour as Jesus cures many. The answer is not theory detached from event. It is testimony attached to visible action.
10.4 The Signs Match Isaiah's Witness#
The works Jesus names are not random. They echo Isaiah's vision of restoration. The weak are strengthened, the fearful are told to be strong, the blind see, the deaf hear, the lame leap, and the tongue of the dumb sings.
Isaiah 35:3-6
Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing...
Isaiah says, He will come and save you. Jesus answers John by pointing to the signs that belong to that coming salvation. The works are not isolated wonders; they are covenantal evidence that the saving visitation is underway.
Isaiah 61:1
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek...
Isaiah 61 adds the anointed-preaching witness. The Spirit is upon the Servant because the LORD has anointed Him to preach good tidings to the meek. Jesus' answer to John joins Isaiah 35 signs with Isaiah 61 good news.
10.5 The Nazareth Reading: The Anointed One Opens the Scroll#
Luke records Jesus opening the scroll of Isaiah in Nazareth. This scene is essential because Jesus publicly identifies His ministry with the Spirit-anointed Servant of Isaiah. The anointing at the Jordan now has a Scripture-defined mission.
Luke 4:17-21
And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives... And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down... And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. The fulfillment is not vague. Jesus reads the anointed mission and declares its arrival. The poor, brokenhearted, captives, blind, and bruised are placed inside the visible ministry of the Anointed One.
10.6 Cleansed, Healed, Raised, and Preached To#
The Gospels then show the signs moving through actual people. The prophetic list is not left abstract. The blind, lame, leprous, oppressed, dead, and poor appear in the path of Jesus.
Matthew 8:2-3
And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
Luke 7:14-16
And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.
The crowd's words are important: God hath visited his people. The signs are interpreted as visitation. The coming salvation Isaiah described is now being recognized in the works of Jesus.
Matthew 9:35
And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.
10.7 Leprosy, Cleansing, and the Gift Moses Commanded#
The cleansing of the leper carries a special legal weight. Jesus does not merely cleanse and move on. He sends the cleansed man into the Moses-commanded witness system.
Matthew 8:4
And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
For a testimony unto them. The phrase keeps the legal witness in view. The cleansing is mercy, but it is also testimony. The priestly inspection and commanded gift place the miracle inside the law's witness system.
Leviticus 14:2-3
This shall be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing: He shall be brought unto the priest: And the priest shall go forth out of the camp; and the priest shall look...
The leper's cleansing therefore joins Jesus' signs to Moses, priesthood, testimony, and restoration. The sign points backward to the law and forward to the priestly work Christ will complete.
10.8 The Poor Have the Gospel Preached to Them#
The final sign Jesus names to John is not a bodily healing only: the poor have the gospel preached to them. This is easy to pass over, but Jesus places preaching to the poor inside the evidence list.
Isaiah 61:1
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek...
Matthew 5:3
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Luke 6:20
Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.
The poor are not a decorative audience. They are named in the prophetic mission of the Anointed One. The kingdom announcement reaches those without strength, status, or possession, revealing that inheritance will be opened by grace rather than seized by power.
10.9 Signs as Legal-Public Witness#
The signs should not be reduced to spectacle. They are public works before witnesses, matching the prophetic Scriptures and confirming the identity of the Anointed One. They are compassion, but they are also testimony.
John 5:36
But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.
John 10:25
Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.
John 14:11
Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.
Jesus Himself identifies His works as witness. The works bear witness that the Father sent Him. This is the exact kind of evidence needed inside the larger inheritance sequence: the one who will die as High Priest and Testator is publicly identified before the death occurs.
10.10 The Signs Point Forward to Death and Inheritance#
The signs confirm the Anointed One, but they do not complete the mission. The blind seeing, the lame walking, lepers cleansed, deaf hearing, dead raised, and poor receiving gospel all point toward a greater work still ahead: sin must be borne, bloodguilt must be answered, the high priest must die, and the inheritance must be opened.
Isaiah 53:4-6
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities... All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah's Servant does not only heal griefs and sorrows from a distance. He bears them. The signs reveal His authority and compassion; the cross reveals the priestly depth of His mission.
Hebrews 2:14-17
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same... Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest...
The sequence therefore moves onward. The signs identify the coming One. The coming One must then bear the priestly work that releases return to possession and opens eternal inheritance.
Closing Witness for Packet 10#
The public witness has now advanced. Jesus has been washed, anointed, proclaimed, tested, and then visibly confirmed by signs that answer the prophets. John asks whether He is the coming One, and Jesus sends back evidence that can be heard and seen.
The blind receive sight. The lame walk. Lepers are cleansed. The deaf hear. The dead are raised. The poor receive the gospel. These signs are mercy, but they are not only mercy. They are covenantal testimony that Isaiah's promised visitation has arrived.
The witness is also legal. Jesus sends the cleansed leper to the priest and to the gift Moses commanded for testimony. Jesus says His works bear witness that the Father sent Him. The signs identify the one who will later bear sin, answer bloodguilt, die as High Priest and Testator, and open the inheritance.
