Death, Testament, and Eternal Inheritance

A discovery of the Old Testament witness, the necessary death, and the inheritance opened in Christ

Opening Witness#

The signs have identified the coming One. The blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor receive the gospel. Yet the signs do not by themselves open the locked box. The inheritance question still requires death.

The refuge-city law already revealed the hinge: after the death of the high priest, the slayer returns into the land of his possession. The question now becomes larger. How does the promised inheritance become eternal inheritance? How does return to possession become restoration in Christ? Hebrews answers by bringing together priesthood, testament, death, and inheritance.

Before Hebrews explains the mechanism, the Scriptures have already laid down witnesses. The Son receives inheritance. The Holy One is not left to corruption. The Davidic king is made firstborn. The right-hand Lord is priest forever. The suffering Servant sees seed after death. The Son of Man receives dominion. The rejected stone becomes the head of the corner. Hebrews does not invent the fulfillment; it opens the legal meaning of what had already been written.

11.1 The Question Death Answers#

The legal pattern has already been placed in the law. Bloodguilt separates the slayer from possession. Refuge preserves life, but refuge is not final return. The high priest's death changes the legal condition and allows return to the land of possession.

Numbers 35:28

Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession.

This verse holds the pieces together: death, priesthood, bloodguilt, return, and possession. It is not merely a rule about ancient cities. It is a witness placed inside the law, waiting for a greater High Priest whose death would open a greater return.

Joshua 20:6

And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.

The return is not vague. It is return to city, house, and possession. The law therefore teaches that priestly death can lawfully change the condition of one kept from possession by bloodguilt.

11.2 The Son Receives the Nations for Inheritance#

Psalm 2 places sonship, kingship, and inheritance together. The Son is declared, and the nations are given as inheritance. This matters because Ephraim's fruitfulness and the nations trajectory cannot be separated from the Son who receives the nations from the Father.

Psalm 2:7-8

I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

The inheritance is given by the LORD to the Son. This helps guard the birthright question. The King does not seize Joseph's blessing by tribal force. The Father gives inheritance to the Son, and the Son lawfully administers what is given.

Acts 13:32-33

And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers, God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.

Acts connects Psalm 2 to resurrection proclamation. The Son's inheritance is not detached from resurrection. The one who receives the nations is the one raised by God.

11.3 The Holy One Is Not Left in Corruption#

The inheritance cannot be administered by a dead king whose body remains in corruption. Psalm 16 supplies resurrection witness: the Holy One will not be abandoned to the grave.

Psalm 16:9-11

Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Acts 2:30-32

Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him... He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.

Peter says David spoke beforehand of the resurrection of Christ. The witness is direct: the Holy One dies, but corruption does not hold Him. Resurrection is necessary because the inheritance is not merely opened by death; it must be administered by the living One.

11.4 The Davidic King Is Made Firstborn#

Joseph's birthright and Manasseh's firstborn position make the word firstborn important. Psalm 89 uses firstborn language for the Davidic king, showing that firstborn status can be placed by divine appointment, not merely by natural birth order.

Psalm 89:26-29

He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation. Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth. My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him. His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.

I will make him my firstborn. The language is appointment language. The Davidic king receives firstborn supremacy. This does not erase Joseph's birthright; it prepares the reader to see how the final Son can be both Judah's King and the appointed Firstborn over the inheritance.

Colossians 1:18

And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

Christ is the Firstborn from the dead. The firstborn question is therefore lifted from natural sequence into resurrection preeminence. The inheritance comes through the Firstborn, and the Firstborn is the risen Christ.

11.5 The Right-Hand Lord Is Priest Forever#

The birthright box cannot be opened by kingship alone. Psalm 110 supplies the union that is needed: the right-hand Lord is also priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

Psalm 110:1

The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

Psalm 110:4

The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

This is the office fusion. The enthroned right-hand Lord is not merely king. He is priest forever. The oath of the LORD establishes the priesthood in a higher order than Levi/Aaron.

Hebrews 7:14-17

For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood. And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest... For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Hebrews states the tension plainly. Jesus springs from Judah, yet priesthood is required. The answer is not a forced Aaronic category but the eternal order of Melchizedek.

11.6 The Suffering Servant Sees Seed After Death#

Isaiah 53 is essential because it places suffering, death, sin-bearing, seed, prolonged days, and spoil together. The Servant dies, yet after death He sees seed and the pleasure of the LORD prospers in His hand.

Isaiah 53:10-12

Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days... He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied... Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong...

This witness is remarkable. The Servant is made an offering for sin, yet He sees seed and divides spoil. Death does not erase fruitfulness or inheritance. Death becomes the way through which the Servant secures them.

1 Peter 2:24

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

The Servant bears sin. The one who opens inheritance must answer sin and bloodguilt, not merely rule over them from a distance.

11.7 The Son of Man Receives Dominion and Kingdom#

Daniel 7 adds another witness: the Son of Man receives dominion, glory, and a kingdom. This matters because the inheritance opened by death is administered under heavenly authority.

Daniel 7:13-14

I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven... And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him...

All people, nations, and languages are placed under the Son of Man's dominion. This joins with Psalm 2's nations inheritance and with Ephraim's fruitfulness trajectory. The nations are not an afterthought; they are part of the inheritance witness.

Matthew 28:18

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

The risen Jesus announces all authority before sending the disciples to all nations. Daniel's dominion witness stands behind the commission.

11.8 The Rejected Stone Becomes the Head of the Corner#

The sequence also includes rejection. The one who becomes head is first rejected. This is important because the cross does not look like enthronement to natural sight, yet Scripture had already placed rejection before exaltation.

Psalm 118:22-24

The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Acts 4:10-12

Be it known unto you all... that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead... This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other...

The rejected stone witness means the cross is not a failure of the plan. The rejection itself had been witnessed beforehand. The LORD's doing becomes marvelous because what looked discarded becomes the head of the corner.

11.9 Hebrews 9 Opens the Legal Mechanism#

After the witnesses have been laid down, Hebrews gives the legal explanation. The inheritance comes by means of death. The testament requires the death of the testator.

Hebrews 9:15-17

And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death... they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.

This is the New Covenant inheritance mechanism. The called receive the promise of eternal inheritance by means of death. The language does not merely describe a tragic martyrdom. It explains why death is necessary for the inheritance to come into force.

The refuge-city law had already taught that priestly death releases return to possession. Hebrews now teaches that testament death releases eternal inheritance. The patterns are not identical in every detail, but they converge in Christ.

11.10 The High Priest and the Testator Become One in Christ#

The wonder of the fulfillment is that the necessary roles converge in one person. The High Priest who dies, the Testator whose death activates the testament, the Mediator of the covenant, and the Heir who receives and administers the inheritance are all gathered in Christ.

Hebrews 4:14

Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God...

Hebrews 8:1

Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;

Hebrews 1:2-3

Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things... ...when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

The Son is appointed Heir of all things. He purges sins and sits at the right hand. This joins Isaiah's sin-bearing Servant, Psalm 110's right-hand priest, and Hebrews 9's death-activated inheritance.

11.11 The Living Heir Administers What His Death Released#

In an ordinary testament, the testator dies and others receive after him. In Christ, something greater happens. He dies to open the inheritance, rises as Firstborn from the dead, and lives forever to administer what His death released.

Romans 8:16-17

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ...

Galatians 4:4-7

But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons... Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Ephesians 1:13-14

...ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession...

The inheritance opened by Christ's death is shared with adopted heirs. The Spirit is the earnest of that inheritance. The living Heir does not abandon the heirs; He brings them into sonship, sealing, and glory.

Closing Witness for Packet 11#

The witness has moved from signs to the necessity of death. The signs identify the coming One, but inheritance requires more than identification. The law had already shown that return to possession comes after the death of the high priest. Hebrews now reveals that eternal inheritance comes by means of the death of Christ.

The Old Testament witnesses stand in sequence. Psalm 2 gives the nations to the Son. Psalm 16 says the Holy One will not see corruption. Psalm 89 makes the Davidic king firstborn. Psalm 110 enthrones the right-hand Lord as priest forever. Isaiah 53 shows the Servant seeing seed after death. Daniel 7 gives the Son of Man dominion. Psalm 118 makes the rejected stone the head of the corner.

Hebrews gathers the sequence into legal clarity: where a testament is, death is necessary. Jesus is the High Priest whose death releases the bloodguilty, the Testator whose death activates the testament, the Mediator who opens the covenant, the Heir of all things, and the Firstborn from the dead who lives to administer the inheritance.
