NO MAN CAN SERVE TWO MASTERS

The House of Masters

A Scripture Study of Counsel, Will, Treasure, Coveting, Mammon, Anxiety, Yielding, Bondage, and Freedom Under the Right King

1. From the Wilderness to the House of Masters#

Packet 9 ended with a kingdom offered by the wrong giver and a kingdom later received from the Father. The wilderness made worship and service explicit: the shortcut promised elevation, but the price was a bow.

That raises the next question. A temptation can be refused in one dramatic moment, but who governs ordinary life after the mountain is gone? What rules the eye, treasure, appetite, anxiety, money, body, mind, and future when no visible tempter is standing nearby?

TEMPTATION → CHOICE → YIELDING → SERVICE → GOVERNANCE

2. Peter — When Love Still Offers the Wrong Road#

Matthew 16:21–23 “From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.”

Peter is not Balaam. He is not Absalom. He is not plotting betrayal. He has just confessed Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God, and his words sound protective: suffering and death should not happen to the One he loves.

Yet Jesus has just named the appointed road: Jerusalem, suffering, death, and resurrection. Peter wants the Person while rejecting the road the Father has appointed for the Person.

LOVE FOR THE PERSON ≠ WISDOM ABOUT THE PATH

3. The Stumblingblock Returns — Skandalon#

Revelation 2:14 “But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.”

Matthew calls Peter an “offence.” Revelation calls Balaam’s device a “stumblingblock.” Behind both English expressions stands the Greek noun σκάνδαλον — skandalon, a trap, snare, or stumblingblock.

The shared word does not make Peter another Balaam. Their motives and methods are radically different. It does reveal something more important for the Counsel Gate: a stumblingblock is identified by what it does to the path, not merely by whether the counselor intends harm.

MALICIOUS COUNSEL CAN STUMBLE | AFFECTIONATE COUNSEL CAN STUMBLE

4. “Thou Savourest Not the Things That Be of God”#

Jesus explains the problem in Peter’s counsel: “thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.” The KJV “savourest” translates a form of φρονέω — phroneō, a verb concerned with mind-set, thought, or what the mind is set upon.

Peter’s affection is real. His interpretation is wrong. Humanly, the cross looks like a catastrophe to prevent. Under the Father’s purpose, the cross is not evidence that the promise failed; it is inside the road by which the promise is fulfilled.

SAME EVENT → HUMAN READING: AVOID IT | GOD’S PURPOSE: PASS THROUGH IT

5. State IV — The House of Masters#

The study can now name its fourth state.

STATE IV — GOVERNANCE / ALLEGIANCE | THE HOUSE OF MASTERS

The governing question is not simply, “What do I want?” It is:

WHO ACTUALLY RULES NOW?

A master is revealed by more than a passing desire. Mastery appears in allegiance, obedience, worship, dependence, fear, valuation, and repeated yielding. The self may imagine that it has escaped all authority, yet Scripture repeatedly describes human action in terms of service.

This is where the MEG / MEI paradox becomes unavoidable:

MEI UNDER GOD → ATTEMPTED MEG-SELF → ACTUAL SERVICE UNDER ANOTHER MASTER

6. The Prayer Begins With Government#

Matthew 6:9–13 “After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”

The two-masters warning appears later in this same chapter. That means Jesus does not suddenly change subjects when He reaches mammon. He has been teaching jurisdiction from the beginning of the prayer.

FATHER → NAME → KINGDOM → WILL → GIVE → FORGIVE → LEAD → DELIVER → THINE

The prayer repeatedly returns the disciple to proper order: the Father is above, His Name is hallowed, His kingdom comes, His will governs, He gives, He forgives, He leads, He delivers, and the kingdom, power, and glory are His.

7. “Thy Kingdom Come. Thy Will Be Done.”#

Matthew 6:10 “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”

The jurisdiction-of-will question is stated before daily bread, debts, temptation, or material concern. The disciple begins with the surrender of the final court of appeal.

ACQUIESCENT WILL: THY WILL GOVERNS | SUBJECTIVE WILL: MY WILL GOVERNS THE EXCEPTION

This does not erase agency. The person still prays, works, chooses, forgives, seeks, and resists. But the will operates ministerially beneath the rightful King.

8. “Give Us This Day” — Provision Under the Giver#

Matthew 6:11 “Give us this day our daily bread.”

The first wilderness temptation asked the hungry Son to turn ability into self-authorized bread. The prayer Jesus teaches His disciples does not deny hunger. It locates bread beneath the Giver.

REAL NEED → ASK THE GIVER → RECEIVE PROVISION ≠ REAL NEED → SELF-AUTHORIZE → TAKE

Work, planning, agriculture, commerce, and skill are not excluded. The prayer does something deeper: it refuses to let the means of provision replace the One from whom life and provision ultimately come.

9. “Forgive Us Our Debts” — Defrauded Without Self-Authorization#

Matthew 6:12, 14–15 “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

The Defrauded premise says more than, “I lack.” It says, “Someone above me or beside me has wrongfully withheld, taken, delayed, or denied what should be mine.” Once that interpretation hardens, grievance can become a private ledger: I am owed; therefore I may now authorize what I once knew was wrong.

Jesus places debt language inside the prayer because the debt may be real. The trespass may be real. Yet the reality of the debt does not make the injured image-bearer the final court. The same person who asks the Father for forgiveness also releases the other person’s debt from becoming a throne over his own conduct.

REAL DEBT → BRING IT UNDER THE FATHER → FORGIVE / SEEK RIGHTEOUS ADJUDICATION ≠ REAL DEBT → MEG-SELF JURISDICTION → RETALIATORY SIN

Seen as a whole, the prayer is posed against the Three D’s and toward the Three C’s:

DEPRIVED — “Give us this day our daily bread.” | DEFRAUDED — “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” | DELAYED — “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done... Lead us... deliver us.”

CONTENTMENT — present lack does not prove injustice. | CONFIDENCE — the Father remains good, knows the need, forgives, leads, and delivers. | CONTINUANCE — the promised kingdom and will of God remain worth waiting for without manufacturing another road.

1 Thessalonians 1:3 “Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;” 1 Corinthians 13:13 “And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”

The Three C’s are therefore not a mechanical technique. Faith, hope, and love are the living dispositions that put faithful response into motion. Faith trusts the One who spoke. Hope keeps the promised end before the eye. Love keeps God and neighbor from becoming objects to exploit, blame, or manipulate for relief.

Contentment without faith can collapse into resignation. Confidence without love can become self-confidence. Continuance without hope can become grim endurance. Scripture instead joins “work of faith,” “labour of love,” and “patience of hope.”

10. “Lead Us... Deliver Us” — The Ministerial Prayer#

Matthew 6:13 “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”

This is almost pure MEI language:

YOU LEAD | YOU DELIVER | YOURS IS THE KINGDOM | YOURS IS THE POWER | YOURS IS THE GLORY

The prayer does not say, “Bless the path I have already chosen.” It asks for leading before the path is settled and deliverance when evil presses upon it.

11. Treasure — What the Heart Prices#

Matthew 6:19–21 “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

Jesus moves from prayer into valuation. Treasure is not merely what sits in a container; it is what has been assigned weight.

Esau’s appetite showed that desire can alter an exchange rate: a bowl can become expensive enough that an inheritance becomes cheap. Jesus now states the governing relation from another angle: what is treasured draws the heart.

VALUATION → TREASURE → HEART

12. The Eye, Chamad, and the Command Not to Covet#

Matthew 6:22–23 “The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!”

The placement is remarkable. Jesus speaks of treasure and heart, then eye and darkness, then two masters. The field of sight returns immediately before the field of service.

Genesis 3:6 “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” Exodus 20:17 “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.”

The Hebrew root חָמַד — chamad — joins these passages. Genesis 3:6 describes the tree as “desired” to make one wise; Exodus 20:17 uses the same root in the command, “Thou shalt not covet.” The connection is not merely between seeing and possessing. It is between sight, assigned value, desire, and the imagined right of acquisition.

SEE → CALL DESIRABLE → COVET / ASSIGN VALUE → ACQUISITION PRESSURE → WHOSE WORD WILL GOVERN THE HAND?

Deuteronomy 15:9 “Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee.” Proverbs 28:22 “He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him.”

The Old Testament itself can place an “evil eye” beside withholding and haste to be rich. That gives Matthew 6 additional canonical depth. Treasure, eye, and mammon are not three unrelated sermon topics. Scripture repeatedly lets valuation become visible through what the eye wants, withholds, envies, or prices above obedience.

13. No Man Can Serve Two Masters — Mammon Names the Rival#

Matthew 6:24 “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”

The Greek sentence is explicitly governmental. “Masters” is κυρίοις — kyriois, lords/masters; “serve” is δουλεύειν — douleuein, to serve as a slave or bondservant. Jesus is not describing two hobbies competing for attention. He is describing rival lordships.

“Mammon” is μαμωνᾶς — mamōnas, a loanword carried into Greek from an Aramaic/Semitic term for wealth or possessions. Lexically, mammon is not itself the phrase “love of money.” It names the wealth that can be handled as property — or promoted into a rival master.

TREASURE → EYE / VALUATION → MAMMON → LOVE / HOLD / SERVE → LORDSHIP

14. Mammon Can Be Stewarded Before It Becomes Master#

Luke 16:10–13 “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own? No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”

Luke supplies the balance Matthew 6 requires. Mammon can be “that which is least” and “that which is another man’s.” Material resources are therefore not automatically the master. They can be entrusted, administered, multiplied, given, saved, traded, or spent under another Lord.

ENTRUSTED WEALTH UNDER GOD → STEWARDSHIP | WEALTH ABOVE GOD → RIVAL MEG

The disorder begins when the tool starts telling the servant what must be protected at any moral cost, which truth cannot be spoken, which neighbor may be used, which promise cannot be waited for, or which command is too expensive to obey.

15. Luke Names the Affection — Money-Love, Covetousness, and Idolatry#

Luke 16:14 “And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him.”

Luke places this sentence immediately after Jesus says, “Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” The adjective translated “covetous” is φιλάργυρος — philarguros: literally a lover or friend of silver/money, from φίλος — philos, loving/fond, and ἄργυρος — argyros, silver.

1 Timothy 6:9–10 “But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

Paul uses the related noun φιλαργυρία — philargyria — “love of money.” Notice the sequence around it: a will set on being rich, temptation, snare, hurtful lusts, coveting, departure from faith, and sorrow. Money is not merely present; desire has begun governing interpretation and direction.

Colossians 3:5 “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:”

Colossians uses another Greek word, πλεονεξία — pleonexia, greed/covetousness, the acquisitive desire for more. It is not the same word as philargyria. The words converge canonically rather than lexically: money-love is one concrete form of covetous desire, and covetousness can become idolatry because the desired created good has begun receiving the devotion, fear, sacrifice, and service owed to God.

The Hebrew chamad of Genesis 3 and Exodus 20, the money-love words philarguros / philargyria, and the broader pleonexia of Colossians do not form one etymological chain. They form a biblical pattern of valuation: DESIRE → COVET → PRICE OBEDIENCE → SERVE THE CREATED GOOD.

This is why covetousness so naturally grows in the soil of the Three D’s: DEPRIVED — “I do not have what should be mine.” DEFRAUDED — “Someone is wrongly keeping it from me.” DELAYED — “I should not have to wait for God’s way.”

And it is why the Three C’s answer that soil: CONTENTMENT refuses to make present lack into injustice; CONFIDENCE refuses to recast the Giver as enemy; CONTINUANCE refuses to make delay into permission. Yet the C’s live only as faith trusts, hope looks forward, and love keeps the Giver and neighbor above the desired thing.

16. Anxiety — When Tomorrow Begins to Govern Today#

Matthew 6:25–32 “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.”

The first word is “Therefore.” Jesus connects anxiety about provision to the teaching that immediately preceded it: treasure, eye, and master.

The anxious questions are real provision questions: What shall we eat? What shall we drink? What shall we wear? They can become a terrain in which the Three D’s whisper again: deprived, defrauded, delayed.

NEED → ANXIETY CAN REINTERPRET THE GIVER → RIVAL SECURITY BECOMES ATTRACTIVE

17. Seek First the Kingdom#

Matthew 6:33–34 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”

Jesus does not abolish seeking. He orders it.

SEEK FIRST → KINGDOM / RIGHTEOUSNESS → OTHER NEEDS REMAIN BENEATH THE FATHER

This is the positive form of governed desire. The disciple can desire food, clothing, safety, meaningful work, and future provision without allowing those goods to become the court that decides whether God may be obeyed.

18. Romans 6 — Yielding Reveals the Master#

Romans 6:12–18 “Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.”

Paul now states the governance principle with almost legal bluntness:

TO WHOM YE YIELD → HIS SERVANTS YE ARE → TO WHOM YE OBEY

Yielding is not a meaningless motion after the real decision has already been made elsewhere. It is the enacted transfer of the member, the body, the will, and the obedient act into service.

19. The MEG-Self Paradox — Autonomy Ends in Service#

The self-rule promise says: “I will decide for myself.” Romans asks a harder question: what happens when the self’s decision becomes obedience to sin?

Romans 6:16 “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?”

MEG-SELF CLAIM: I ANSWER TO NO ONE → PAUL: WHOM DID YOU OBEY?

The act may feel autonomous because no human authority forced it. Yet the act can still reveal service. The creature has not become source; it has chosen which claim will govern the member.

20. Your Members Become Instruments#

Romans 6:13 “Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.”

The word translated “instruments” is ὅπλα — hopla, a plural term that can refer to instruments, implements, or weapons depending on context. Paul’s image is concrete: the body can be placed at the disposal of one government or another.

The hand thread returns. Eve’s hand took. David restrained his hand. Jesus refused to make His hand the instrument of a rival giver. Paul now tells the believer to yield the members to God.

HAND / MOUTH / EYE / BODY → NOT SELF-OWNED WEAPONS → YIELDED INSTRUMENTS

21. “Obeyed From the Heart” — Received Teaching and Willing Allegiance#

Romans 6:17–18 “But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.”

Paul does not describe freedom as the disappearance of obedient response. He describes a changed obedience: “obeyed from the heart” a form of teaching that was “delivered” to them.

That is recognizably ministerial. Truth is received, the heart responds, and the person is freed from one mastery into another service.

TRUTH DELIVERED → HEART OBEYS → FREED FROM SIN → SERVANTS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

22. Two Masters, Two Ends — Wages and Gift#

Romans 6:20–23 “For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

The chapter ends with two governments and two ends.

SIN → SERVICE → FRUIT → WAGES: DEATH

GOD → SERVICE → FRUIT UNTO HOLINESS → GIFT: ETERNAL LIFE

The contrast between wages and gift is especially striking after a study of mammon. Sin’s economy pays what its service produces. God’s life is not seized as the successful wage of MEG-self; it is given through Jesus Christ our Lord.

23. Romans 7 — “Thou Shalt Not Covet” Becomes Personal#

Romans 7:7–11 “What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.”

Paul now personalizes the command that has been following the study since Eden. “Thou shalt not covet” uses ἐπιθυμέω — epithymeō, to desire/covet; verse 8 uses the related noun ἐπιθυμία — epithymia, rendered “concupiscence.” The command exposes desire, but sin takes occasion through the commandment and converts desire into a killing allegiance.

The sequence is stated in Paul’s own first-person terms:

ALIVE WITHOUT THE LAW → COMMANDMENT CAME → SIN TOOK OCCASION → DESIRE / CONCUPISCENCE → DECEPTION → “I DIED” / “SLEW ME”

James 1:14–15 “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” Romans 5:12 “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”

These texts can be held together without collapsing their stages. Mortal humanity enters an Adamic condition marked by death and predisposition; temptation and desire are real; but personal sin is not identical with the mere existence of desire. James says desire conceives and brings forth sin, and sin brings forth death. Romans 7 narrates commandment, occasion, deception, sin, and personal death in sequence.

24. “What I Would, That Do I Not” — The Captive Body and the Needed Deliverer#

Romans 7:14–25 “For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.”

Romans 6 described yielding to a master; Romans 7 describes what the mastery feels like from inside the divided man. The will can recognize the good while the members have been trained into another law. What was once presented as “my choice” can become captivity.

This is where the MEG-self promise collapses. The self that claimed final jurisdiction discovers that it cannot simply judge itself clean, reverse death, or command the captive body back into innocence. Paul does not ask, “What technique shall repair me?” He asks, “Who shall deliver me?”

MEG-SELF JUDGMENT → YIELDING → SIN IN THE MEMBERS → CAPTIVITY → DEATH → “WHO SHALL DELIVER ME?”

Hebrews 7:24–27 “But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.” Hebrews 10:14 “For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.”

The answer therefore has to come from beyond the condemned and captive condition: a holy Priest who is not himself under the same personal sin, who continues ever, who offers Himself once, and whose priesthood does not expire. The problem cannot be permanently solved by the works of the same hand that became an instrument of sin. It requires the faithful, sufficient work God provides in Christ.

25. John 8 — The Servant of Sin#

John 8:31–36 “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

Jesus joins Word, continuance, truth, service, house, Sonship, and freedom. Freedom is not defined by the hearer’s self-description — “we were never in bondage.” The Son identifies the actual master by the practice of sin.

26. The Son Makes Free#

John 8 also prevents a false conclusion. If the Son makes a person free, freedom is not an empty house with no relationship, no Word, and no Lord.

The chapter began with:

CONTINUE IN MY WORD → KNOW TRUTH → TRUTH MAKES FREE

The Son who frees is also the One whose Word is continued in. Biblical freedom is therefore not freedom from every claim. It is liberation from false mastery into life under the Son.

27. False Liberty — Servants of Corruption#

2 Peter 2:18–19 “For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.”

Peter gives the counterfeit in one sentence:

PROMISE LIBERTY → ALLURE DESIRE → OVERCOME → BONDAGE

This is the MEG-self sales pitch exposed from the other side. The message sounds like freedom. The result is mastery by corruption.

28. Submit, Resist, Draw Near#

James 4:4, 7–10 “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”

The order matters.

SUBMIT TO GOD → RESIST THE DEVIL → DRAW NIGH TO GOD

Resistance is not MEG-self flexing against a rival power. The person first comes under the rightful government. Then resistance has a source and a direction.

James also names the divided state: “double minded.” Two competing governments do not produce stable freedom.

29. Abide — Freedom Does Not Mean Independence From the Vine#

John 15:4–5, 8 “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.”

Freedom from the wrong master does not turn the branch into its own vine.

ABIDE → RECEIVE LIFE → BEAR FRUIT → FATHER GLORIFIED

The branch remains dependent and fruitful at the same time. This is one of Scripture’s clearest pictures of strong MEI: dependence does not erase action; it makes faithful fruit possible.

30. Romans 1 — Governance Transfer in Slow Motion#

Romans 1:21–25, 28 “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;”

Romans 1 gives one of Scripture’s clearest text-driven governance descents. The movement is not a sudden unexplained leap.

KNEW GOD → DID NOT GLORIFY → NOT THANKFUL → VAIN REASONING → DARKENED HEART → CLAIMED WISDOM → EXCHANGED GLORY / TRUTH → WORSHIPPED AND SERVED CREATION → GIVEN OVER

31. “Neither Were Thankful” — The Source Is Forgotten#

Romans 1:21 “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.”

“Neither were thankful” appears very early in the sequence. That placement deserves attention.

Thanksgiving names the gift as gift and therefore keeps the Giver in view. Ingratitude can let provision, ability, status, pleasure, or possession begin to appear self-originating — detached from the One from whom they were received.

GIFT REMEMBERED → GIVER REMAINS SOURCE | GIFT ABSOLUTIZED → CREATION CAN BECOME SOURCE

32. Worship and Service Follow the Exchange#

Romans 1:25 “Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.”

This is the MEG / MEI inversion in a single verse.

CREATOR SHOULD BE MEG → CREATURE SHOULD REMAIN MINISTERIAL → EXCHANGE → CREATURE RECEIVES WORSHIP / SERVICE

Mammon is one possible created rival. Appetite can be another. Status, sexuality, reputation, power, comfort, ideology, or self-image can all become practical measures when the creature begins commanding what obedience to the Creator is allowed to cost.

33. “God Gave Them Over” — Government Becomes Formation#

Romans repeats the language of being “given up” or “given over.” That introduces a sobering feature of governance: what is repeatedly chosen can become the environment in which future judgment operates.

The study has insisted that the gates are not one-way doors. Scripture calls people to turn, resist, submit, draw near, continue, and abide. Yet Scripture also warns that repeated exchanges are formative. A master repeatedly obeyed becomes easier to obey again.

EXCHANGE → SERVICE → REPEATED YIELDING → GOVERNANCE BECOMES FORMATION

34. Joshua — Choose Whom Ye Will Serve#

Joshua 24:14–15 “Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

Long before Jesus says, “No man can serve two masters,” Joshua places covenant life in service language. The people are not invited to invent a private sovereignty. They are confronted with rival allegiances.

CHOOSE → WHOM → YE WILL SERVE

The wording joins will and service without pretending the servant creates the true God by choosing Him. YHWH is already YHWH. The choice concerns which lordship the people will acknowledge and obey.

35. Build So Far — The House of Masters#

TRUE MEG — GOD AS SOURCE / MEASURE / AUTHORITY

↓

MEI — “I RECEIVE; YOU GIVE. I FOLLOW; YOU LEAD.”

↓

FAITH / HOPE / LOVE — TRUST THE GIVER / SEE THE PROMISE / LOVE GOD AND NEIGHBOR

↓

CONTENTMENT / CONFIDENCE / CONTINUANCE — THE THREE C’s

↓

PRAYER — “THY WILL” / “GIVE US” / “FORGIVE US” / “LEAD US” / “DELIVER US”

↓

TREASURE / EYE / DESIRE REMAIN UNDER KINGDOM

↓

YIELD MEMBERS TO GOD → SERVANTS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS → FRUIT UNTO HOLINESS → GIFT OF LIFE

Against it stands the counterfeit:

ALTERNATE COUNSEL → DEPRIVED / DEFRAUDED / DELAYED → COVET / REPRICE THE GOOD → MEG-SELF AUTHORIZATION → YIELD MEMBERS TO SIN → DECEPTION / CAPTIVITY → DEATH

36. Gate Check — Who Governs Here?#

• Which story is trying to explain this moment: Deprived, Defrauded, or Delayed?

• Which faithful response is being called for: Contentment, Confidence, or Continuance?

• Is faith trusting what God has said, hope keeping the promised end in view, and love protecting God and neighbor from becoming tools for my desired outcome?

• What has become so valuable that I now measure obedience by whether it threatens that thing?

• What am I coveting — and what has my desire quietly made cheaper in order to obtain it?

• Am I calling something “freedom” because no human authority can stop me, while Scripture identifies the same practice as service or bondage?

• Is anxiety making tomorrow govern today?

• Has a created tool — money, status, pleasure, reputation, security, power — begun telling me what I may not surrender?

• Am I asking the Father to lead me, or asking Him to validate a route I have already authorized?

• Does my grievance give another person’s debt more authority over my conduct than God’s command?

• Has desire remained a temptation I can resist, or have I crossed the Authorization Gate and begun yielding my members?

• What do my members repeatedly become instruments for?

• What counsel sounds compassionate but actually teaches me to avoid an appointed truth, correction, sacrifice, or responsibility?

• When I say “my choice,” whom does the choice actually obey?

• Does the fruit of this service move toward holiness and life, or toward shame, bondage, extraction, and death?

• Can I identify the Source, Measure, Authority, giver, and master operating beneath the decision?

37. Freedom Under the Right King#

Romans 6:22 “But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.”

The biblical answer to false mastery is not an autonomous image-bearer finally answering to no one.

It is the image-bearer restored beneath the rightful Source, bearing fruit because life is received, exercising will without making will ultimate, handling created goods without worshiping them, planning without being ruled by fear, forgiving without denying truth, resisting the devil from a posture of submission to God, and serving righteousness from the heart.

FREED FROM SIN → SERVANTS TO GOD → FRUIT UNTO HOLINESS → LIFE

MEI under the true MEG is therefore not the defeat of image-bearing. It is its recovery. The creature no longer needs the counterfeit throne of MEG-self because the true King does not erase the servant’s agency; He restores it to truthful service, faithful stewardship, fruitful dependence, and life.

The King who frees is also the Deliverer Romans 7 needed: the Son and eternal Priest whose faithful self-offering answers the death and captivity MEG-self cannot reverse. Freedom is therefore received before it is exercised.

Jesus’ sentence remains the governing disclosure:

NO MAN CAN SERVE TWO MASTERS.

The question is not whether a master exists. The question is whether the will, the body, the treasure, the eye, the fear, and the future are being trained beneath the One who gives life — or beneath something created that can only consume the service it demands.
