BEFORE THE TREE: WHO DEFINES GOOD?

Source, Measure, Authority, Image-Bearing, and the First Jurisdiction of the Will

A Scripture Study of Genesis 1–2, Tov and Ra, Magistrate and Minister, and the World Before the Serpent Speaks

1. Before the Tree — God Has Already Spoken#

Genesis 1:1 — KJV “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”

The study begins before the serpent, before the forbidden taking, and even before the tree is named. Genesis does not open with mankind deciding what reality means. It opens with God creating reality.

That order matters. The first actor is God. The first initiative is God’s. The world does not generate itself, name itself, or authorize itself. It receives existence before any creature exercises judgment within it.

GOD CREATES → CREATION RECEIVES BEING → GOD SPEAKS → REALITY TAKES FORM

2. God Sees, Evaluates, and Calls It Good#

Genesis 1:31 — KJV “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.”

Genesis 1 repeatedly uses the same rhythm: God creates, God sees, and God declares what He has made good. The pattern appears in verses 10, 12, 18, 21, and 25 before the chapter culminates in “very good.”

This is more than a pleasant description. It establishes a jurisdiction of judgment. The Creator is not merely the strongest being in the scene. He is the One whose wisdom gives the created order its proper measure.

GOD MAKES → GOD SEES → GOD DECLARES TOV

3. Tov — The Measure Appears Before the Test#

The Hebrew word translated good is טוֹב — tov (H2896). Its range can include good, pleasant, beneficial, beautiful, fitting, or favorable according to context. In Genesis 1 the governing point is simpler than a dictionary entry: God repeatedly applies tov to what He has made.

The Bible therefore introduces good as a received judgment before it becomes a disputed judgment. Mankind will later see, desire, reason, choose, and rule. None of those capacities is evil. But they awaken inside a world whose true Measure precedes them.

4. “It Is Not Good” — God Can Name a Real Lack#

Genesis 2:18 — KJV “And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”

Genesis itself prevents a shallow reading of contentment. Before sin, God looks at a real human condition and says, “It is not good.” Faithfulness is therefore not pretending every present circumstance is good merely because God is good.

More importantly, Adam does not have to invent the diagnosis. God names the lack. God defines the problem. God announces the provision. The Measure is capable of saying both tov and not tov.

REAL LACK → GOD NAMES IT → GOD PROVIDES

5. Provision Before Prohibition#

Genesis 2:8–9 — KJV “And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.”

Genesis 2:15–17 — KJV “And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

The order should be allowed to stand. Garden. Placement. Vocation. Pleasant trees. Good food. Free permission. Then one boundary.

The command does not arrive from a stranger guarding scarce resources. It comes from the same LORD God who formed the man, planted the garden, caused the trees to grow, placed the man within abundance, and gave him work worth doing.

GIVER → ABUNDANCE → VOCATION → FREEDOM → BOUNDARY

6. Image-Bearers — Real Dominion, Received Dominion#

Genesis 1:26–28 — KJV “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”

The image-bearer is not created as a motionless subject. Humanity is blessed, commissioned, and told to exercise real dominion. Scripture therefore does not solve self-rule by erasing human agency.

But the dominion is visibly received. God creates the image-bearer. God blesses. God gives the commission. God identifies the field of rule. Human authority is genuine precisely because it is delegated.

CREATED BY GOD → BLESSED BY GOD → COMMISSIONED BY GOD → REAL DOMINION UNDER GOD

7. An English Doorway — Magistrate and Minister#

Two English word-families give this study a useful doorway. Magistrate / master come through the Latin magister, the chief or directing side of a relation. Minister comes through Latin minister, the servant or attendant acting beneath or on behalf of another.

From those families this study uses two short memory markers: MEG for the magistrate/master side, and MEI for the ministerial side.

8. Magister / Master — The Greater, Directing Side#

At the highest level of this study, MEG belongs to God. The label gathers three recurring biblical functions:

SOURCE — life, provision, strength, wisdom, inheritance, and being are received from Him.

MEASURE — His judgment establishes what is true, good, fitting, righteous, and wise.

AUTHORITY — He possesses rightful jurisdiction to command, prohibit, give, appoint, judge, and send.

Psalm 18:2 — KJV “The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.”

Psalm 23:1 — KJV “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

The Psalms do not treat God merely as a rulebook. He is Rock, Fortress, Deliverer, Strength, Shepherd. The One who commands is also the One from whom life and protection are received.

9. Minister — Real Action Under Another’s Authority#

MEI names the corresponding creaturely posture: receiving, learning, following, serving, administering, and acting within authority that has been given rather than self-created.

Ministerial does not mean weak. A minister may possess great strength, responsibility, skill, authority, or initiative. The defining question is not, “Can this servant act?” It is, “From whom does the servant receive the right, measure, and mission of the action?”

MEI: I RECEIVE; YOU GIVE. I FOLLOW; YOU LEAD.

10. Scripture Shows Delegated Power Without Autonomous Jurisdiction#

Psalm 103:20–21 — KJV “Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word. Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.”

Hebrews 1:13–14 — KJV “But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?”

Psalm 103 makes the distinction vivid. These ministers excel in strength, yet strength does not make them autonomous. Their power remains beneath the voice and pleasure of YHWH.

Luke 9:1–2 — KJV “Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.”

Jesus gives the disciples power and authority, then sends them. Their action is real; the authority is real; the results are real. Yet the sequence remains Giver → given authority → sent servants → authorized action.

POWER ≠ SELF-AUTHORIZATION

11. MEG — Source / Measure / Authority#

The shorthand can now be stated cleanly:

TRUE MEG — GOD AS SOURCE / MEASURE / AUTHORITY

SOURCE: What I possess is received before it is administered.

MEASURE: My perception and judgment are not the final court simply because they are mine.

AUTHORITY: Ability, opportunity, desire, or injury do not automatically create permission.

These three will quietly govern the later study of counsel, grievance, desire, money, kingship, temptation, masters, and formation. The visible action will repeatedly ask the same hidden question: Who supplied the source, who set the measure, and who possessed the authority?

12. MEI — Receive / Learn / Follow / Serve#

MEI can likewise be stated as a living posture rather than a personality type:

RECEIVE → LEARN → FOLLOW → SERVE → EXERCISE DELEGATED AUTHORITY

The image-bearer receives life and instruction, learns the way of the Giver, follows that wisdom, serves faithfully, and then exercises real stewardship inside what has been entrusted.

This is why dependence and dominion are not opposites. The branch can bear much fruit precisely because it does not become its own vine. The servant can rule faithfully precisely because the servant does not need to become the ultimate Magistrate.

13. The Psalms Give MEI a Voice#

Psalm 25:4–5 — KJV “Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.”

Psalm 119:34 — KJV “Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.”

The faithful voice is not mindless. It asks to be shown, taught, led, and given understanding. The psalmist expects to think, choose, walk, and act; he simply refuses to enthrone his own perception as the source of the way.

14. Image-Bearing Is Not Passivity#

This distinction matters because submission can be badly misunderstood. Scripture does not describe the faithful image-bearer as having no judgment, desire, courage, initiative, or power. Adam is told to dress and keep. Humanity is told to subdue and have dominion. Disciples are sent. Kings judge. Priests serve. Wisdom is sought.

The question is what those faculties are for. Human agency is designed to become an intelligent expression of God’s wisdom within creation, not a competing source of reality.

NOT: STOP RULING → BUT: RULE UNDER THE TRUE KING

15. Rule Representatively, Not Independently#

A useful distinction now appears:

RULE REPRESENTATIVELY / RULE INDEPENDENTLY

To rule representatively is to exercise genuine authority while remaining answerable to the One whose image is borne. To rule independently is to treat the self as though it can generate its own final measure, timing, permission, or definition of good.

The later language of acquiescent will and self-rule will grows from this distinction. The image-bearer never ceases to possess a will. The issue is whether the will remains governable by truth.

16. The Tree Is Named for Knowledge of Good and Evil#

Genesis 2:9 — KJV “And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.”

Genesis 2:16–17 — KJV “And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

The title of the tree should now sound heavier. Genesis has spent an entire chapter showing God declaring good, and then places before the image-bearer a tree named for the knowledge of good and evil.

The coming crisis is therefore not well described as hostility to knowledge. God has already made intelligent image-bearers, given them dominion, spoken to them, and assigned meaningful work.

17. Wisdom Is Not the Enemy#

Later Scripture makes this plain. God does not oppose wisdom. He gives wisdom. He commands the pursuit of wisdom. He equips rulers to discern. The problem in Eden cannot therefore be reduced to “God did not want humans to know anything.”

The distinction that will matter throughout the study is received wisdom versus seized jurisdiction.

WISDOM RECEIVED UNDER GOD ≠ JUDGMENT SEIZED FROM GOD

That difference eventually becomes the difference between SEE → DESIRE → RECEIVE and SEE → DESIRE → TAKE.

18. Solomon Receives Discernment Between Good and Bad#

1 Kings 3:7–9 — KJV “And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in. And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?”

1 Kings 3:10–12 — KJV “And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.”

Solomon asks for the very category Eden places under tension: discernment between good and bad. But the relationship is reversed from self-rule. The king says, in effect, Give thy servant understanding.

SERVANT ASKS → GOD GIVES → DISCERNMENT OPERATES → DELEGATED JUDGMENT

19. James Says: If Wisdom Is Lacking, Ask the Giver#

James 1:5–6 — KJV “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.”

James gives the same posture in remarkably simple form. Lack wisdom? Ask the God who gives.

That sentence will become especially important later in the same chapter, where desire, enticement, sin, and death are traced as a process. For now the hook is enough: the need for wisdom does not make the hand necessary. The Giver remains available.

LACK → ASK GOD → GOD GIVES → RECEIVE IN FAITH

20. Lexical Exhibit — Tov and Ra#

טוֹב — tov (H2896): good; pleasant; beneficial; fitting; beautiful or favorable according to context.

רַע — ra (H7451): bad; evil; harmful; adverse; ruinous or calamitous according to context.

Genesis 2:17 joins the pair in “the knowledge of good and evil.” The vocabulary is broad enough to include moral judgment while also touching what is beneficial or harmful, fitting or ruinous.

That breadth strengthens the governing question. The image-bearer must live in a world where actions have moral, relational, bodily, and covenant consequences. Who will supply the measure by which the creature distinguishes the way of life from the way that destroys?

21. The Will Exists Before the Temptation#

Genesis 1–2 already contains command, permission, vocation, dominion, naming, keeping, eating, and abstaining. The human will is therefore present before temptation.

This becomes crucial later. The biblical answer to temptation cannot be the destruction of will. It is the ordering of will.

A WILL UNDER GOD IS STILL A REAL WILL

The later contrast can be foreshadowed without exhausting it:

ACQUIESCENT WILL — I REMAIN SUBJECT TO THE RIGHTFUL MEG

SELF-RULE WILL — I MAKE GOD’S WORD, TIMING, OR BOUNDARY SUBJECT TO MY JUDGMENT

22. State I — The Field of Sight and Word#

The study can now name its first major state: ORIENTATION / PERCEPTION — THE FIELD OF SIGHT AND WORD.

Before the serpent speaks, the image-bearer already inhabits a world of visible goods and received words. Trees are pleasant to sight. Food is good. Work is meaningful. Dominion is real. One boundary is named. The Giver has supplied both the world and the interpretation required to live within it.

WHAT DO I SEE? → WHOSE WORD TELLS ME WHAT IT MEANS?

This is the terrain on which every later gate will stand. Counsel will attempt to reinterpret. Grievance will attempt to recast. Desire will attempt to govern. The hand will eventually act. But all of it begins with orientation: Who is Source? Who is Measure? Who is Authority?

23. BUILD SO FAR — The World Before the Voice#

GOD CREATES → GOD GIVES → GOD SEES → GOD CALLS TOV

REAL LACK → GOD CAN NAME IT → GOD CAN PROVIDE

IMAGE-BEARER → REAL WILL → REAL DOMINION → RECEIVED AUTHORITY

TRUE MEG → SOURCE / MEASURE / AUTHORITY

HEALTHY MEI → RECEIVE / LEARN / FOLLOW / SERVE / RULE REPRESENTATIVELY

WISDOM → ASK / RECEIVE / DISCERN → NOT SEIZE / SELF-AUTHORIZE

The opening architecture is therefore not a mechanical system imposed upon Genesis. It is the sequence Genesis itself gives: God is first; God gives; God defines; the creature receives; the creature is then entrusted with real action.

24. ORIENTATION CHECK — Before Another Voice Speaks#

• Who is functioning as the Source in this situation?

• Who is supplying the Measure by which I am calling something good, harmful, fair, necessary, or wise?

• Does a real lack automatically prove that the Giver has deprived me—or can I let God name the lack before I assign motive?

• Am I confusing capacity, opportunity, or power with permission?

• Is my authority received and accountable, or am I treating it as self-originating?

• Am I willing to ask, learn, wait, and receive understanding before acting?

• Can I still say: “I receive; You give. I follow; You lead.”?

25. The Question at the Edge of the Counsel Gate#

Everything is now in place.

God has created. God has given. God has declared tov. God has named a genuine not good and supplied the answer. Humanity has received image, blessing, vocation, dominion, abundance, permission, and one boundary. Wisdom can be received. Authority can be exercised ministerially.

Then Genesis introduces another voice.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN ANOTHER COUNSELOR OFFERS THE MINISTER A WAY TO BECOME HIS OWN MAGISTRATE?

The next packet begins before the fruit moves and before the hand reaches.

It begins with the sentence that tries to move the Measure:

Genesis 3:1 — KJV “Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”

NEXT — PACKET 2: THE VOICE BEFORE THE HAND
