Israel the Name
The Word Tabernacled Among Us
The Eternal Son, Jacob's Open Heaven, and the Sent Son
Final Draft Review
A Scripture-led discovery study
John does not begin a disconnected story. The markers planted in Jacob, Exodus, Isaiah, and Ezekiel now meet the Eternal Word: God, Creator, Life, Light, Tabernacled Presence, Revealer, King of Israel, Son of Man, Temple, and Sent Son.

1. John Does Not Start a New Story#
Packet 7 ended with a problem that the prophets themselves created. Israel had been given the Name, the Presence, the Messenger, the Voice, preservation, redemption, shepherding, rest, and vocation; yet the people could rebel and profane the Name before the nations. The storyline therefore needs a faithful Revealer who can make the Name known without rebellion and restore what the Name-bearing people failed to represent.
John does not ask the reader to forget that storyline. He opens by moving farther back than Abraham, Jacob, Moses, or national Israel. He begins “in the beginning.” The Person entering the Gospel is not a new actor who appears after the Old Testament. John identifies the One who was already there before the world itself.
JACOB ASKED THE NAME → EXODUS REVEALED YHWH → ISAIAH STACKED THE FUNCTIONS → JOHN IDENTIFIES THE PERSONAL REVEALER
2. “The Word Was God” — Before Abraham, Before Israel, Before Creation#
John 1:1–5 (KJV)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
John begins with identity and agency. The Word is with God and the Word was God. Creation is attributed to Him. Life is in Him. Light comes through Him. That places this Person before the fathers, before the nation, before the covenant journey through Egypt, and before the creation whose image-bearers the later story will seek to restore.
That matters for Isra-El. The El of the Name cannot finally be reduced to an abstract title attached to a later national identity. John introduces a personal divine Revealer whose existence and work precede the nation that will carry the Name.
WORD → WITH GOD → GOD → CREATOR → LIFE → LIGHT
3. The Word Became Flesh and Tabernacled Among Us#
John 1:14 (KJV)
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
The Greek verb behind “dwelt” is skēnoō — G4637. It carries the sense of tenting / tabernacling. Packet 6 had already planted the Exodus movement: SENT BEFORE → FACE WITH → DWELL AMONG. John now places that dwelling inside the incarnation: the Word who was God becomes flesh and tabernacles among His people.
Exodus had said, “I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God” (Exodus 29:45). John now says the Eternal Word dwelt among us and that His glory was seen. The storyline is not abandoning the dwelling-marker. It is becoming personal and visible in the Son.
SENT BEFORE → FACE WITH → DWELL AMONG → THE WORD TABERNACLED AMONG US → GLORY BEHELD
The word glory should also be remembered. John has not yet spent everything that “we beheld his glory” will mean. The study only needs to mark it now so that later revelation can retrieve it.
4. The Son Declares the God No Man Has Seen#
John 1:18 (KJV)
No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
John now gives the earlier Face-question an interpretive center. Jacob had named the place Peniel — Face of God and testified, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” Exodus then spoke of the Face / Presence going with Israel. Isaiah remembered the Messenger of His Face. John identifies the Son as the personal One who declares / makes known the God whom man does not see in unmediated fullness.
This does not erase Peniel. It helps the reader ask the right question about Peniel: Who is the personal divine Revealer through whom God has been encountered, heard, followed, and made known? John directs the answer toward the Eternal Son.
FACE AT PENIEL → FACE / PRESENCE WITH ISRAEL → MESSENGER OF HIS FACE → THE SON DECLARES THE UNSEEN GOD
5. Believe on His Name — Born Not of Blood, but of God#
John 1:11–13 (KJV)
He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
The Name-question now moves from what is named upon a people to the Person whose Name is believed. John places reception and rejection beside birth-source. Some of His own reject Him; those who receive Him and believe on His Name are given authority to become children of God.
The verb believe is pisteuō — G4100. It must remain distinct from the noun faith — pistis, G4102 and from faithful — pistos, G4103 when those fields later enter the study. Here John is describing an actual response to the Person and His Name.
John also places a boundary around the source of the children of God: not of blood ... but of God. The study should not solve the whole Israel question here, but the hook is now impossible to ignore. Genesis 48 asked that a name be named upon descendants; John now says that becoming a child of God is not authored by blood alone. The later question will be unavoidable: is the covenant Name finally carried by DNA alone, or by those whose life and identity are located in the One whose Name they believe?
6. “An Israelite Indeed” and the King of Israel#
John 1:47–49 (KJV)
Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.
John has already placed Name, belief, birth of God, and rejection at the doorway of the Gospel. Now he places Israel directly beside Jesus. Nathanael is called “an Israelite indeed” and his confession immediately identifies Jesus as Son of God and King of Israel.
That sequence matters. John is not merely giving Nathanael a compliment and then changing subjects. The identity of an Israelite indeed is immediately brought into the presence of the King of Israel. Then Jesus answers by reaching back to Jacob.
7. Jacob’s Open Heaven Moves to the Son of Man#
Genesis 28:12, 16–17 (KJV)
And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. ... And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not. And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
John 1:50–51 (KJV)
Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these. And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
The Jacob hyperlink is direct. Genesis gives Jacob an opened-heaven scene with angels ascending and descending, and Jacob names the place house of God / gate of heaven. John then places that same ascending-and-descending language upon the Son of Man.
There is also a small but important Greek grammar shift. In verse 50 Jesus addresses Nathanael in the singular; in verse 51 the “you / ye” is plural. The promise widens beyond Nathanael alone. The disciples are being taught to recognize the larger reality centered in the Son of Man.
JACOB: HOUSE OF GOD / GATE OF HEAVEN → JOHN: HEAVEN OPEN → ANGELS ASCEND / DESCEND UPON THE SON OF MAN
This is another teaching moment in recognition. Jacob marked a place where heaven and earth met in his vision. John now centers the heaven-earth movement on a Person. The storyline is moving from signs, places, and historical encounters toward the One in whom their meaning becomes concentrated.
8. The Temple Is His Body#
John 2:19–21 (KJV)
Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of his body.
The dwelling-marker advances again. Exodus had a tabernacle among the people. John 1 says the Word tabernacled among us. John 2 then identifies Jesus’ own body as the temple. The dwelling-place theme is therefore no longer merely architectural; it is being located in the incarnate Person.
DWELL AMONG → WORD TABERNACLED AMONG US → HIS BODY IS THE TEMPLE
This prepares another future movement without spending it yet. If the dwelling has become personal in the Son, the later promise of Presence with and then in His people will not be a disconnected doctrine. It will grow from the same dwelling storyline.
9. Earthly Things, Heavenly Things, and the Son Sent into the World#
John 3:12–17 (KJV)
If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
Jesus’ words to Nicodemus are not merely a rebuke. Nicodemus is a teacher of Israel, and Jesus is teaching him how revelation works: if the learner cannot recognize what God has shown through the earthly things, how will he understand the larger heavenly reality when it is opened?
That is also a teaching moment for this study. The historical markers are real: crossing, Messenger, Voice, Name, preservation, dwelling, prepared place, inheritance, rebellion, restoration. They are not disposable illustrations. They train the reader to recognize larger realities when the same functions converge in the Son.
And now one of Packet 6’s most important markers returns: SENT. Exodus said, “I send an Angel / Messenger before thee.” John now says, “God sent ... his Son into the world.” The role is growing clearer: the One who comes from God is not self-appointed. He is the commissioned Sent One whose coming is for salvation.
EXODUS: I SEND A MESSENGER → JOHN: GOD SENT HIS SON INTO THE WORLD → THE WORLD THROUGH HIM MIGHT BE SAVED
John will continue repeating sent as an identity-function marker. For now it is enough to plant the return. The reader already knows what a Sent Messenger does: He comes with the Sender’s authority, Voice, Name, purpose, and destination.
10. John’s Recognition Stack — The Person Is Becoming Clear#
John has not yet reached every later title, but he has already answered the central question from Jacob and Exodus with extraordinary density. The personal Revealer is now identified by who He is and by what He does.
WORD → WITH GOD → GOD → CREATOR → LIFE → LIGHT → FLESH → TABERNACLED AMONG US → GLORY BEHELD → SON → DECLARES THE UNSEEN GOD
HIS NAME BELIEVED → CHILDREN BORN OF GOD → ISRAELITE INDEED → SON OF GOD → KING OF ISRAEL → SON OF MAN → HEAVEN OPEN UPON HIM
BODY AS TEMPLE → CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN → GIVEN SON → SENT SON → SAVIOUR PURPOSE
Now place those markers beside the line already carried from Jacob, Exodus, and Isaiah: El Shaddai; YHWH; Messenger; Sent One; Name within Him; Face / Presence; Shepherd; Redeemer; Preserver; Bringer-In; Dwelling among; Rest-giver; Name made known. John is not asking the reader to discard the earlier witnesses. He is giving the reader a Person in whom those markers can now be tested and recognized.
The recognition is not complete yet. John will still let this Person speak about Abraham, I AM, the Shepherd, the Sender, the Father, the flock, the Way, and finally His own risen identity. But the movement has crossed an important threshold: the El of Isra-El is no longer an unnamed mystery standing at the edge of Jacob’s story. The Eternal Son has entered the storyline in flesh.
Exhibit A. Greek Word and Relationship Notes#
These receipts preserve only the Greek discoveries already needed for this packet’s reader-facing connections.
Greek / Grammar | John Passage | Earlier Marker Retrieved | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|---|
skēnoō — G4637 “dwell / tabernacle” | John 1:14 | Exodus 29:45–46: YHWH will dwell among Israel | The dwelling-marker becomes incarnate: the Word tabernacles among us. |
pisteuō — G4100 “believe” | John 1:12 | Hear / obey / respond to the Voice; Name-bearing covenant response | John places genuine response at the doorway: receive Him, believe on His Name, born of God. |
Plural “you / ye” in John 1:51 | John 1:50–51 | Jacob’s personal opened-heaven scene | The promise broadens from Nathanael singular to the disciples plural; Jacob’s imagery becomes a larger Son-of-Man revelation. |
Packet 8 has identified the Eternal Son without spending the later climax. The reader now has enough to remember the critical returns: DWELL AMONG → TABERNACLED AMONG; FACE / REVEALER → SON DECLARES GOD; NAME → BELIEVE ON HIS NAME; ISRAEL → KING OF ISRAEL; JACOB’S OPEN HEAVEN → SON OF MAN; SENT MESSENGER → SENT SON. The next movement can now let Jesus speak the markers for Himself.
