1. YHWH Went Before Them — and the Angel of God Went Before Them#
Packet 5 ended with the nations hearing what YHWH had done and recognizing the God whose works carried His Name beyond Egypt. The next question is more personal: Who actually goes with Israel? Exodus first says YHWH went before the people. Then, at the sea, the narrative names the Angel of God as the One who had been going before the camp.
Exodus 13:21–22 (KJV)
And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.
Exodus 14:19–20 (KJV)
And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them: And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.
The storyline has not changed leaders between these verses. It first says YHWH went before them; then it refers to the Angel of God which went before the camp. At the critical moment the leading Presence moves behind Israel and stands between the people and the returning power of Egypt. The function stack therefore grows again: Lead → Light → Guard → Separate → Preserve.
Notice also the wording “from before their face.” The Hebrew prepositional language is built from panim — H6440, face. The Face-thread that began at Peniel has not disappeared; it is now embedded in the language of the Presence going before the people called Israel.
2. A Messenger “Before Thy Face”#
Exodus 23:20 (KJV)
Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared.
Angel here is Hebrew malak — H4397, a messenger — a role-word that tells what the Person is doing. The verb behind “I send” is shalach — H7971, to send, commission, or dispatch according to context. The verse therefore gives two distinct markers at once: Messenger tells the role; Sent tells the commission. He is sent before Israel, to keep them in the Way, and to bring the people into the prepared place.
The Hebrew behind “before thee” is again face-language — lefanekha, before your face. The Messenger is sent before the face of Israel; later in the same Exodus story YHWH will say, “My Presence shall go,” using the same Face-word. The text is stacking direction, identity, and Presence around the One who goes with them.
3. Keep Thee in the Way; Bring Thee Into the Place#
Three Hebrew fields in Exodus 23:20 deserve to be carried forward because each becomes a later recall-marker: keep, Way, and bring into.
“Keep” is shamar — H8104: guard, keep, watch according to context. “Way” is derek — H1870. “Bring thee into” uses the common movement verb bo — H935. These are not ornamental words. The Messenger is being assigned a covenant route: keep the people in the Way and bring them into what YHWH prepared.
Exodus 6:8 (KJV)
And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the LORD.
Packet 4 heard YHWH say, “I will bring you in.” Exodus 23 now says the Messenger will “bring thee into the place which I have prepared.” The promised act is not being abandoned; it is being carried through the Messenger who goes before Israel.
YHWH: I WILL BRING YOU IN → THE MESSENGER: BRING THEE INTO THE PREPARED PLACE → INHERITANCE
4. “Obey His Voice” — and “Do All That I Speak”#
Exodus 23:21–22 (KJV)
Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him. But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; Then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries.
The Hebrew hearing-word is shama — H8085. English rightly renders it “obey” here because the demanded hearing is responsive hearing. The striking sequence is the pronouns: obey His voice — then — do all that I speak. The Messenger’s voice is placed inside YHWH’s own speech-command.
This hearing marker should be carried with Sent. The Messenger is not merely commissioned to go before Israel; Israel is commanded to hear / obey His voice. Scripture is stacking two functions together: the Sent One and the Voice that must be heard. Israel’s covenant vocation will repeatedly turn on whether the people hear the voice they have been given.
5. “My Name Is in Him”#
Exodus 23:20–21 (KJV)
Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him.
The phrase is compact but heavy: “My Name is in Him.” The Hebrew wording uses shem — H8034, name, with qereb — H7130, the inner part or midst: the Name is within Him. The Messenger is therefore not merely carrying a written title outside Himself. YHWH places His own Name inside the identification of the One whose voice must be obeyed and whose presence before Israel is covenantally serious.
The function stack is now increasingly specific: Messenger → Keeper → Guide in the Way → Bringer-In → Voice to be heard → Bearer of YHWH’s Name. The next passage makes the first-person covenant claims even more direct.
6. The Messenger Says, “I Brought You Up”#
Judges 2:1 (KJV)
And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.
The Messenger speaks in the first person and claims the same covenant acts Packet 4 heard YHWH claim: I brought you out; I brought you in; I swore the land; My covenant. The role-word “messenger” remains, but the speech identifies the function and authority of the speaker by works already attached to YHWH.
Exodus 6:6–8 (KJV)
Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians... and I will redeem you... And I will bring you in unto the land... and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the LORD.
The comparison is the point. Exodus 6 gives the first-person covenant acts to YHWH. Judges 2 puts those same acts in the Messenger’s mouth. The identity trail is therefore being built by Name + voice + covenant works + remembered history, not by the role-word alone.
7. Moses Asks About the One Who Will Go With Them#
After covenant breach, Moses does not treat the identity of the One who accompanies Israel as a minor logistical detail. He asks who will go, and the conversation gathers several of this study’s strongest markers into a single exchange: Name, grace, Way, knowing, Presence, people.
Exodus 33:12–13 (KJV)
And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight. Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.
Moses asks about the One who will be sent, but he also asks to know YHWH’s Way so that he may know YHWH. The conversation is relational and recognitional at the same time: know me by Name → found grace → show me Your Way → that I may know You.
The noun for “grace” here is chen — H2580. It belongs to the same Hebrew grace/favor family as the chanan — H2603 supplication/graciousness field carried from Jacob, while remaining a distinct grammatical form. Grace, Name, Way, and knowing are now gathered around the question of Presence.
8. “My Presence Shall Go” — My Face Shall Go#
Exodus 33:14–15 (KJV)
And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.
The KJV says “My presence,” but the Hebrew word is panim — H6440, Face. In the Hebrew wording, YHWH says, in substance, “My Face shall go, and I will give thee rest.” That makes the earlier Peniel marker suddenly much larger.
The rest-word is nuach — H5117. The One who keeps the people in the Way, brings them in, and bears the Name is now joined to the Face/Presence that accompanies Israel and gives rest. These are function markers, but they are also recognition markers. Scripture is teaching the reader how to identify the continuing covenant Person by what He does.
9. Grace, Recognition, Distinction, and Rest#
Exodus 33:16–17 (KJV)
For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth. And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.
Packet 5 showed YHWH distinguishing Israel from Egypt so that Pharaoh and Egypt would know who YHWH is. Here Moses uses the same recognition logic around the Presence: How shall it be known? The answer is not a badge carried apart from God. It is that You go with us.
The KJV “separated” is again from the palah — H6395 distinction field already used in the plagues. The earlier distinction protected Israel in the midst of Egypt. Now Moses says the distinguishing mark among all peoples is that YHWH’s own Presence goes with them. Distinction is therefore attached to Presence, grace, and recognition — not merely to ancestry or geography.
GRACE → FACE / PRESENCE → YHWH GOES WITH THEM → DISTINCTION → “WHEREIN SHALL IT BE KNOWN?” → REST
10. Sent Before, Face With, Dwelling Among — The Marker Stack#
By now Exodus has placed three movements beside one another, and all three should be remembered. The Messenger is SENT BEFORE the people; YHWH’s FACE / PRESENCE GOES WITH them; and YHWH says He will DWELL AMONG them. These are not three unrelated ideas. They form a growing storyline of commissioned Presence: before them, with them, and dwelling in their midst.
Exodus 29:45–46 (KJV)
And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God. And they shall know that I am the LORD their God, that brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, that I may dwell among them: I am the LORD their God.
The verb translated “dwell” is shakan — H7931, to dwell or settle. From this same Hebrew family comes mishkan, the tabernacle or dwelling-place. The verse also repeats the recognition purpose already established: “they shall know that I am the LORD their God.” The movement is therefore not merely geographical. The One who sends, goes with, preserves, and brings in also declares His purpose to dwell among the people who are learning to know Him.
Carry the progression forward without spending its later fulfillment: SENT BEFORE → FACE WITH → DWELL AMONG. Inside the Sent-Messenger passage itself are the companion markers: KEEP → WAY → BRING INTO → PREPARED PLACE → HEAR HIS VOICE → MY NAME IS IN HIM. These recurring functions are teaching the reader how to recognize the continuing covenant Person as the storyline advances.
YHWH GOES BEFORE → ANGEL OF GOD GOES BEFORE → I SEND → MESSENGER → SENT BEFORE THEIR FACE → KEEPER IN THE WAY → BRINGER-IN → PREPARED PLACE → VOICE TO BE HEARD → YHWH’S NAME WITHIN HIM → “I BROUGHT YOU UP” → “MY COVENANT” → FACE / PRESENCE GOES WITH THEM → DWELL AMONG → GRACE → DISTINCTION → REST
That stack should remain open. The study has not yet spent the later identification. It has simply allowed Scripture to attach Names, roles, commission, voice, works, Presence, dwelling, and recognition to the Person who goes with Israel. The reader does not need the later answer yet; the reader needs the markers firmly enough to recognize them when they return.
The prophets will later look back at this same Exodus and gather several of these terms into one inspired remembrance: Angel, Face / Presence, salvation, redemption, bearing, Spirit, Shepherd, rest, and Name. That prophetic memory is where the recognition trail goes next.
