Ephraim and Manasseh
Melchizedek, the Church, Manifold Wisdom, and Final Inheritance
Joseph's Double Portion, the Nations, and the Manifold Wisdom of God
Opening Orientation for Packet 9#
Packet 8 faced the hard tension: Genesis 48 truly elevates Ephraim, but Psalm 78 says God refused Joseph and did not choose Ephraim; He chose Judah, Zion, and David. Ezekiel 37 then reveals the prophetic answer: the stick of Judah and the stick of Joseph/Ephraim are joined in God's hand under one King, one Shepherd, one covenant, and one sanctuary.
Packet 9 now asks what kind of fulfillment can carry that whole structure without flattening it. A merely tribal answer is not enough. A merely political answer is not enough. A sentimental unity answer is not enough. The restoration requires the promised Seed, the chosen King, the true Shepherd, the greater Joshua, the true High Priest, and the Priest-King order that is older and higher than Levi.
This is where Melchizedek becomes necessary. The study has already traced inheritance, refuge, high-priest death, return to possession, Judah's king line, Joseph's birthright, Ephraim's nations-fruitfulness, Manasseh's preserved inheritance, Galilee's nations commission, and Ezekiel's joined sticks. Melchizedek provides the order in which kingship and priesthood are not divided into competing offices, but gathered in one person under God.
1. Why the Study Must Move from Joined Sticks to Melchizedek#
Ezekiel 37 gives the joined-stick picture, but the joined sticks still require a ruler, a shepherd, a covenant, and a sanctuary. The sticks do not join themselves. The divided house does not repair itself. Ephraim's corrupted fruitfulness cannot purify itself. Judah's ruler line cannot become merely political and still solve the priestly problem of sin, blood, exile, sanctuary, and access to God.
The study therefore must move from joined sticks to priesthood. If the house is restored but guilt remains unresolved, inheritance is not secure. If the nation is reunited but access to God is not opened, the restoration is incomplete. If the Shepherd gathers but there is no atonement, the scattered may be collected but not reconciled. If the King reigns but the priestly death-and-return-to-possession pattern is not fulfilled, Joshua 20 and Numbers 35 remain unresolved shadows.
2. Melchizedek Appears Before Sinai, Levi, Aaron, and the Tabernacle#
Genesis 14:18-20
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
Melchizedek appears before Sinai, before Levi is separated, before Aaron is consecrated, before the tabernacle is built, and before the Levitical sacrificial system is established. This timing matters. Melchizedek is not introduced as an afterthought to the law. He appears in the Abrahamic promise world, before Israel becomes a nation under Moses.
He is both king and priest. He is king of Salem, and he is priest of the most high God. He brings bread and wine. He blesses Abram. He blesses the most high God. Abram gives him tithes. The scene is brief, but its placement is profound. Before the law, before the tabernacle, before Aaron, there is already a priest-king blessing Abram in the name of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth.
This becomes important because the Ephraim/Manasseh study has shown a restoration problem that cannot be solved by tribal function alone. Judah carries the ruler line. Levi later carries priestly service under the law. Joseph's sons carry the birthright. Ephraim carries nations-fruitfulness. Manasseh preserves endangered inheritance. But Melchizedek introduces a higher category: king and priest together, blessing connected to Abraham before the later divisions of office.
3. Melchizedek Blesses Abram and Receives Tithes#
The blessing of Abram by Melchizedek is not a casual greeting. Hebrews later argues from the superiority of the one who blesses and from Abraham giving tithes. The lesser is blessed by the better. Levi, still in Abraham's loins, is understood as paying tithes through Abraham. The Melchizedek order is therefore presented as greater than the Levitical order.
Hebrews 7:4-7
Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils... And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better.
This matters for the study because the final answer cannot be merely Aaronic. The city-of-refuge system under Moses and Joshua requires the death of the high priest before return to possession. That is a true legal pattern. But the final High Priest who opens inheritance must be greater than Aaron, because the restoration being traced is larger than one tribe, one tabernacle administration, or one temporary priestly generation.
4. Psalm 110: The King Is Also Priest Forever#
Psalm 110:1
The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
Psalm 110:4
The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
Psalm 110 is one of the essential bridges. It is royal: the Lord sits at the right hand until enemies are made His footstool. It is priestly: the sworn word declares Him priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. It is not temporary. It is not merely ceremonial. It is sworn by YHWH and will not be repented of.
This means Scripture itself prepares for a Priest-King. Judah's ruler line does not eliminate priesthood; it must be joined to a higher priesthood. The Melchizedek order allows the King to be Priest without collapsing Him into the Levitical/Aaronic order. This is why Christ can be from Judah according to the flesh and yet be High Priest according to an order that is older and higher than Levi.
This protects the study from a thin kingship-only conclusion. The Son of David does not merely reign. He mediates. He intercedes. He gives access. He fulfills atonement. He opens the way into the presence of God. He gathers the people not only as subjects under a throne, but as reconciled, cleansed, and priestly people under the Priest-King.
5. Hebrews Reveals the Higher Priesthood#
Hebrews 6:18-20
...we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul... whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
Hebrews 7:14-17
For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood... Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
Hebrews gives the interpretive key. Jesus sprang out of Judah. Moses did not speak of Judah concerning priesthood under the Levitical arrangement. Therefore, if Jesus is High Priest, His priesthood cannot be explained by ordinary Aaronic descent. Hebrews answers this through Psalm 110: He is priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
This matters for the joined-stick study because Judah must provide the ruler. But the ruler must also solve the priestly problem. In Christ, Judah's King is not barred from priestly fulfillment because His priesthood is not based on Levitical genealogy. His priesthood is based on the power of an endless life and the sworn word of God.
Hebrews 7:24-25
But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him...
The unchangeable priesthood is essential. The high priest in the refuge pattern dies, and the manslayer returns to possession. But Christ's death and resurrection do something greater. He dies, rises, continues forever, and intercedes. The final refuge is not temporary hiding; it is secured access, cleansed conscience, and restored inheritance in the Priest who cannot be replaced by death.
6. The Refuge Pattern and the Death of the High Priest#
Numbers 35:25
...and he shall abide in it unto the death of the high priest, which was anointed with the holy oil.
Numbers 35:28
Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession.
Packet 7 showed that the cities of refuge are not merely compassionate geography. They are legal geography. Blood has been shed. Judgment is necessary. The guilty or endangered person does not simply wander freely back into possession. Refuge protects life, but return to possession is tied to the death of the high priest.
This is why the high-priest theme cannot be separated from inheritance. If the study has traced forfeiture, preserved inheritance, Joseph's bones, Shechem, Joshua, Galilee, and return to possession, then priestly death belongs at the center of the fulfillment. The High Priest is not ornamental. His death changes legal standing with respect to possession.
7. From Aaronic Shadow to Melchizedek Fulfillment#
The Aaronic and Levitical system is not treated as a mistake in this study. It is a God-given shadow, legal tutor, and sacrificial witness. It teaches blood, cleansing, holiness, priestly mediation, approach, separation, and acceptable worship. It gives categories the New Testament uses constantly. But the system itself points beyond itself.
Hebrews 8:1-2
Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest... A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.
Hebrews 9:11-12
But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come... by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
The movement is not from law to lawlessness. It is from shadow to substance, copy to reality, repeated sacrifices to once-for-all offering, mortal priesthood to unchangeable priesthood, earthly tabernacle pattern to the true sanctuary. The Old Testament is not discarded; it is fulfilled by the One to whom it pointed.
This matters for the New Testament church. The church cannot understand its priestly language, access language, sacrifice-of-praise language, cleansing language, or temple language apart from the Old Testament. The foundation is not boring. It is the legal vocabulary by which Christ's work becomes intelligible.
8. Jesus Gathers the Offices: Seed, King, Shepherd, Joshua, and High Priest#
The study has followed divided functions: Seed promise, Abrahamic blessing, Jacob/Israel, Joseph's birthright, Judah's ruler line, Ephraim's fruitfulness, Manasseh's preservation, Joshua's inheritance leadership, refuge through high-priest death, and Ezekiel's one Shepherd. Christ gathers these lines without confusion and without flattening them.
Thread | Old Testament Witness | Fulfillment in Christ |
|---|---|---|
Seed | Genesis 3:15; Genesis 22:18 | The promised Seed who defeats the serpent and blesses the nations. |
Judah / King | Genesis 49:10; Psalm 78; Psalm 110 | The Son of David, ruler, King, and Lord seated at the right hand. |
Joseph / Rejected and Exalted | Genesis 37-50 | The rejected one whose suffering becomes salvation and provision for many. |
Joshua / Inheritance | Joshua 3-4; Joshua 20 | The greater Joshua who brings His people into true rest and inheritance. |
High Priest | Numbers 35; Leviticus; Psalm 110 | The true High Priest whose death and resurrection secure access and restoration. |
Shepherd | Psalm 23; Ezekiel 34; Ezekiel 37 | The good Shepherd who gathers one flock under one Shepherd. |
Nations | Genesis 12; Genesis 48; Isaiah 9 | The risen King sends His disciples to all nations. |
This table is not meant to reduce the study. It shows why the fulfillment cannot be one-dimensional. Christ is not merely a tribal claimant. He is the One in whom the separated offices and promises are gathered lawfully, prophetically, and covenantally.
9. Atonement Is Fulfilled, Not Abandoned#
Because this study connects the new covenant, Melchizedek, Galilee, and nations-fruitfulness, it must state clearly that atonement is not abandoned. The move from Levitical/Aaronic administration to Melchizedek fulfillment is not a move away from sacrifice, blood, cleansing, or priestly mediation. It is the fulfillment of those realities in Christ.
Hebrews 10:10
By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Hebrews 10:19-22
Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus... Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith...
The cleansed people do not enter God casually. They enter by blood, by the opened way, by the High Priest over the house of God. This preserves the legal seriousness of the Old Testament while showing the greater access opened by Christ. The result is not performance anxiety under an unclear religious system, but confidence grounded in the completed work of the Priest-King.
Therefore the study should hold two truths together. First, the old covenant sacrificial system is fulfilled in Christ and is not the continuing governing system for approach to God. Second, the reason believers can offer praise, thanksgiving, witness, and service is not because atonement became unnecessary, but because Christ has accomplished what the shadows taught was necessary.
10. The Church as Manifold Wisdom, Not an Afterthought#
Ephesians 3:8-11
...that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ... To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:
Ephesians 3 is essential because it names the church as part of the display of God's manifold wisdom. The church is not the simplification of the Old Testament. The church is the visible result of the eternal purpose of God in Christ Jesus. The unsearchable riches of Christ are preached among the Gentiles, and through the church God's manifold wisdom is made known.
This fits the Ephraim/Manasseh study because the story has always included nation and nations. Abraham is promised blessing for all families of the earth. Jacob is told of a nation and a company of nations. Ephraim is blessed toward a multitude or fullness of nations. Galilee becomes Galilee of the nations. The resurrected Christ commissions disciples to teach all nations. Ephesians does not erase this movement; it reveals its mystery-form in Christ.
11. Near and Far Brought Together in One New Man#
Ephesians 2:13-16
But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace... for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross...
Ephesians 2 must be read with the Old Testament structure in view. The far are brought near by the blood of Christ. The dividing wall is answered in His flesh. The two are made one new man. Reconciliation to God happens in one body by the cross. This is not mere social harmony. It is blood-grounded, cross-grounded, covenantal reconciliation.
This language resonates with the joined-stick pattern without being limited to it. Ezekiel 37 joins Judah and Joseph/Ephraim under one King. Ephesians 2 reveals Jew and Gentile, near and far, reconciled in Christ. The two passages are not identical statements, but they belong to the same wisdom of God: division is not allowed to have the final word when Christ has accomplished reconciliation.
This also gives a mature way to handle the Israel-and-nations signal inside Ephraim and Manasseh. Joseph's sons are born from Joseph and Asenath in Egypt, then adopted by Jacob into Israel. That is not the full New Testament mystery, but it is an early embodied witness that God's promise can gather what appears divided: Israel and nations, affliction and fruitfulness, exile and inheritance, near and far.
12. Living Stones, Holy Priesthood, and Royal Priesthood#
1 Peter 2:4-5
To whom coming, as unto a living stone... Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 2:9
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
The church's priestly identity must be handled carefully. Believers are not independent priests replacing Christ. They are living stones built up as a spiritual house. They are a holy priesthood that offers spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. They are a royal priesthood, but only under the true Priest-King.
This is why the Melchizedek order matters. Christ is the Priest-King. Under Him, the people become priestly and royal in a derived way. They are not self-authorized. They do not generate their own access. They do not offer sacrifices apart from Christ. They are made acceptable by Him and through Him.
13. Priest-Kings Under the Priest-King#
The study has repeatedly observed a priest-king direction. Melchizedek is king and priest. Psalm 110 places priesthood on the enthroned Lord. Hebrews identifies Jesus as High Priest after that order. 1 Peter calls believers a royal priesthood. Revelation speaks of redeemed people made kings and priests unto God. The pattern is not that believers become independent priest-kings; the pattern is that the Priest-King creates a people who share in His life, service, witness, and reign by grace.
Revelation 1:5-6
Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father...
Revelation 5:9-10
...thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
Notice the order. He loved. He washed from sins in His own blood. He redeemed by blood. Then the people are made kings and priests. The identity follows redemption. The priestly and royal calling is not human achievement. It is the result of the slain Lamb's work.
This fits the whole study. The final people of God are not formed by ethnic pride, tribal rivalry, religious performance, or self-made priesthood. They are redeemed by blood, gathered from nations, made kings and priests unto God, and brought under the reign of the Lamb. Ephraim's corrupted self-fruit is replaced by blood-redeemed nations-fruitfulness under Christ.
14. Galilee, Nations Commission, and Ephraim's Redeemed Fruitfulness#
Matthew 28:16-20
Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them... All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations...
Galilee should now be understood as part of the fulfillment movement, but with the proper guardrail. Galilee is not Ephraim by tribal allotment. Galilee is tied explicitly to Zebulun and Naphtali in Isaiah 9 and Matthew 4. Yet Joshua 20 places Kedesh in Galilee, Shechem in Ephraim, and Hebron in Judah within the same west-side refuge architecture. Joshua, the faithful Ephraimite, appoints refuge that touches Galilee, Ephraim, and Judah.
When the risen Christ appoints the disciples to a mountain in Galilee and sends them to all nations, the study sees more than travel detail. Jerusalem has displayed the crucified and risen Judah-King. Galilee of the nations becomes the commission-stage where the regathered disciples are sent outward. The fish-like multiplication echo in Genesis 48, the fishermen of Galilee, the fishers-of-men pattern, and the nations commission all reinforce the redeemed-fruitfulness thread.
15. The Old Testament Foundation of New Testament Church Identity#
One of the major purposes of this study is to restore the reader's sense that the Old Testament is not boring or non-applicable. The Old Testament gives the categories: creation, fall, seed promise, covenant, name, land, inheritance, forfeiture, birthright, ruler, priesthood, blood, sanctuary, exile, return, shepherd, fruitfulness, nations, and God's dwelling with man.
Without those categories, the New Testament becomes easy to flatten. 'Saved' can become vague. 'Grace' can become thin. 'Church' can become an institution detached from covenantal foundation. 'Priesthood' can become a slogan. 'Kingdom' can become politics. 'Nations' can become missions strategy rather than the promised scope of God's blessing in Christ. 'Inheritance' can become metaphor without legal backbone.
This study therefore uses the Old Testament not as decorative background but as legal and covenantal foundation. Genesis 48, 1 Chronicles 5, Numbers 27 and 35, Joshua 20, Hosea 10-11, Psalm 78, Ezekiel 37, Genesis 14, Psalm 110, and the prophets give the New Testament church the language needed to understand condition, need, breach, brokenness, restoration, fulfillment, improbability, and the character, name, and glory of God.
16. Final Inheritance: Revelation 21-22#
Revelation 21:3-4
And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men... And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death...
Revelation 21:22-24
And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it... And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it...
The final inheritance is not merely land recovery, tribal administration, or restored political order. Revelation shows the tabernacle of God with men, the removal of death, the Lamb as light, no temple because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple, and the nations walking in the light. The story ends with God dwelling with man.
This fulfills the sanctuary direction of Ezekiel 37 at the highest level. Ezekiel promises God's sanctuary and tabernacle among the restored people. Revelation shows the final dwelling, where temple mediation has reached its end because God and the Lamb are present. The inheritance is no longer exposed to curse, death, exile, or division.
This also fulfills the nations direction. Ephraim's corrupted fruitfulness was fruit unto himself and multiplied altars. In Revelation, fruitfulness is no longer idolatrous. The tree of life is present. The nations are healed. The servants of God serve Him. His name is on their foreheads. This is fruitfulness restored under the Lamb.
17. No Curse, Face to Face, Name on Foreheads#
Revelation 22:1-4
And he shewed me a pure river of water of life... on either side of the river, was there the tree of life... and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse... and they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.
The final movement reaches back to Eden and forward beyond all breach. The river of life flows. The tree of life is present. The curse is removed. The servants serve. They see His face. His name is in their foreheads. This answers the earliest wound: separation from God, exile from the garden, barred access to the tree, and life under curse.
The Genesis 48 name-transfer now finds its final horizon in God's name upon His servants. Jacob placed the covenant family name upon Ephraim and Manasseh. Revelation shows the servants of God with His name on their foreheads. The name is no longer carried in fragile tribal form subject to corruption and exile; it is carried in final face-to-face inheritance under God and the Lamb.
18. Healing of the Nations and the Fruitfulness Restored#
The phrase 'healing of the nations' is especially important in this study. The nations thread has moved from Abraham, to Jacob, to Joseph's Egyptian-born sons, to Ephraim's multitude-of-nations blessing, to Galilee of the nations, to the Great Commission, to the redeemed from every kindred, tongue, people, and nation, and finally to the leaves of the tree for the healing of the nations.
This means the nations are not a late-stage add-on. The nations have been in the promise from the beginning. What changes is clarity and fulfillment. In Christ, the nations are not gathered through Ephraim's self-fruit or Israel's political strength. They are gathered through the slain and risen Lamb, the Priest-King, the true High Priest, the Shepherd who gathers one flock, and the King whose authority extends to heaven and earth.
This is the redemption of fruitfulness. Ephraim's name and blessing point toward fruitfulness, but Hosea shows that fruitfulness can corrupt into self-fruit and false altars. Revelation shows fruitfulness healed: the tree of life, twelve manner of fruits, water of life, healing of nations, no curse, and servants who see God's face. Fruitfulness is no longer severed from worship; it is rooted in the presence of God and the Lamb.
19. What the Whole Series Has Shown#
The series has shown that Ephraim and Manasseh cannot be treated as small tribal details. Genesis 48 is a major legal and covenantal scene. Joseph's sons are born in Egypt through Asenath, given to Joseph by Pharaoh and daughter of the priest of On. Jacob adopts them into Israel, places the covenant name upon them, and forms Joseph's double portion. Manasseh preserves endangered inheritance. Ephraim carries double fruitfulness and nations-multitude language.
The series has also shown that the blessing is not moral immunity. Ephraim later becomes corrupted. Hosea shows fruitfulness turned inward and multiplied altars. Psalm 78 says God refused Joseph and did not choose Ephraim; He chose Judah, Zion, and David. Yet God does not forget Ephraim. Hosea 11 asks how God could give Ephraim up. Jeremiah calls Ephraim a dear son. Ezekiel joins the stick of Joseph/Ephraim to the stick of Judah under one King and one Shepherd.
The series has then traced Joshua, the faithful Ephraimite, through inheritance and refuge. Joshua appoints cities of refuge, where return to possession is tied to the death of the high priest. Joshua 20:7 places Galilee, Shechem in Ephraim, and Hebron in Judah within the west-side refuge structure. In the New Testament, Christ is crucified and raised in Judah's royal sphere, gathers His disciples in Galilee, and sends them to all nations.
Finally, the series has shown that only Christ can carry the whole structure. He is the Seed, King, Shepherd, true Son, greater Joseph, greater Joshua, High Priest, Melchizedek Priest-King, and Lamb. In Him, the birthright and ruler line, inheritance and priesthood, refuge and return, nation and nations, living stones and royal priesthood, and final healing of the nations are gathered for the glory of God.

22. Transitional Closing for Packet 9 and the Series#
Packet 9 has carried the study from joined sticks to the Priest-King. The prophetic restoration of Judah and Joseph/Ephraim under one King and one Shepherd requires more than tribal reunion. It requires atonement, priesthood, sanctuary, access, inheritance, and the dwelling of God with His people. Christ fulfills this as High Priest after the order of Melchizedek, the Judah-King whose priesthood rests not on Levitical descent but on the sworn word of God and the power of an endless life.
The church is therefore not a simplified replacement of the Old Testament story. The church is part of the manifold wisdom of God in Christ. The far are brought near by blood. The two are made one new man. Living stones are built into a spiritual house. A holy and royal priesthood offers spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. The redeemed from every kindred, tongue, people, and nation are made kings and priests unto God by the blood of the Lamb.
The final inheritance answers the whole story. God dwells with man. The Lamb is the light. The temple is no longer seen as a separate structure because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple. The river of life flows. The tree of life bears fruit. The nations are healed. The curse is removed. The servants see His face. His name is on their foreheads. The study that began with Jacob placing the covenant name on Joseph's sons ends with God's servants bearing His name in final restored inheritance.
