Section Thesis#

Primary passages: Genesis 32:22–32; Numbers 6:22–27; Joshua 3–6; Psalm 110; Zechariah 12:10–13:1; Matthew 3–4; John 1:19–34; 1 Corinthians 10:1–13; Hebrews 5–7; Revelation 19; Revelation 21–22.

1. Jesus Descends to the Jordan#

Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. —Matthew 3:15, KJV

And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. —Matthew 3:17, KJV

Jesus enters the Jordan willingly. He does not come because He needs repentance or cleansing. He submits to the Father’s appointed course and publicly begins the ministry that will move through wilderness, proclamation, suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension. The heavens open, the Spirit descends and remains upon Him, and the Father identifies Him as the beloved Son.

John gives the Israel-centered purpose of the event: “that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.” The river associated with Israel’s passage into inheritance becomes the setting where the true Son is revealed to Israel. Jacob received the name Israel after clinging to the divine Blesser; the nation Israel crossed in obedient faith; now Jesus stands in the water as the obedient Son who will fulfill what neither the man nor the nation could fulfill perfectly.

JACOB: EMPTIED AND NAMED ISRAEL → NATION: BELIEVES AND CROSSES → JESUS: FULFILS RIGHTEOUSNESS AND IS MANIFESTED TO ISRAEL

2. The Lamb Is Announced at the Crossing Corridor#

Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. —John 1:29, KJV

At the Jordan, passage and sacrifice meet. Israel had once crossed under the ark toward an earthly inheritance. John now points to Jesus and declares that the Lamb who removes the world’s sin has arrived. The One entering the water is not merely another member of Israel awaiting deliverance. He is the One through whom the final deliverance will be accomplished.

His descent into and rising from the water are not themselves the crucifixion and resurrection, but they visibly carry the form of the mission He is entering. He descends in willing obedience, rises, receives the public witness of Spirit and Voice, and proceeds toward testing. Later baptismal teaching will speak of burial with Christ and rising with Him to walk in newness of life. The Jordan therefore stands at the beginning of the obedient course that will pass through death into glory.

3. “Well Pleased” and the Wilderness Test#

But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. —1 Corinthians 10:5, KJV

Paul describes the Exodus generation as baptized unto Moses in the cloud and sea, yet says that God was not well pleased with many of them. They passed through water, but unbelief and disobedience remained. At Jesus’ Jordan baptism, the Father publicly declares the opposite: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Immediately the Spirit leads Him into the wilderness for forty days.

Jesus answers the tempter from Deuteronomy, the book that interprets Israel’s wilderness testing. Where Israel murmured concerning bread, tested God, and turned toward idolatry, the Son lives by every Word that proceeds from God, refuses presumption, and worships YHWH alone. The Father’s declaration is not empty praise. The Son enters the test and proves the willing obedience declared at the river.

4. Grace and Supplication at the Pierced One#

Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him... —Hosea 12:4, KJV

And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced... —Zechariah 12:10, KJV

Hosea reveals that Jacob’s prevailing at Peniel was marked by weeping and supplication. He does not overpower God as an autonomous hero. His natural strength is wounded, and he clings in dependent appeal to the One who alone can bless. Zechariah later reverses the direction: the Spirit of grace and supplications is poured from YHWH upon the house of David and Jerusalem, and the people look upon the One who is pierced.

Grace descends; supplication rises. The dependent cry is not payment for blessing. It is the response awakened when God pours grace and reveals the pierced One. Zechariah then opens the next movement: “In that day there shall be a fountain opened ... for sin and for uncleanness.” The Face encountered by Jacob, the pierced YHWH seen by Jerusalem, and the fountain of cleansing converge in the Son who gives Himself and pours out the Spirit.

GRACE POURED OUT → SUPPLICATION AWAKENED → THE PIERCED ONE SEEN → THE FOUNTAIN OPENED

5. Numbers 6: Blessing, Keeping, Face, Grace, Peace, and Name#

The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. —Numbers 6:24–26, KJV

And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them. —Numbers 6:27, KJV

The priestly blessing gathers the themes opened at Peniel. Jacob asks to be blessed; his life is preserved; he sees the Face; he receives the name Israel. Numbers 6 then commands the priests to pronounce blessing and keeping, the shining Face, grace, peace, and the placement of YHWH’s Name upon the children of Israel. Peniel is not the formal institution of the Aaronic blessing, but it functions as an early personal enactment of the realities later invoked over the nation.

The Aaronic priests can pronounce the blessing, but they cannot generate its final substance. They are mortal servants within a temporary order. Psalm 110 and Hebrews disclose the eternal Priest after the order of Melchizedek. Jesus does not merely speak blessing over the people from outside their need. Through incarnation, obedience, sacrifice, resurrection, and intercession, He secures the blessing He gives.

6. Psalm 110: Priest, Lord, Willing People, and Conquest#

The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. —Psalm 110:1, KJV

Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. —Psalm 110:4, KJV

Psalm 110 holds together realities often separated in later discussion. David’s Lord sits at YHWH’s right hand, rules in the midst of enemies, receives a willing people in the day of His power, serves as Priest forever after the order of Melchizedek, and strikes through kings in judgment. Priesthood, kingship, blessing, voluntary obedience, and conquest belong to one promised Person.

The final line—“He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head”—is worthy of contemplation, but the brook is not identified as Jabbok or Kidron. It should not be used to relocate Peniel. Within the Psalm, the Priest-King passes “in the way” through abasement, refreshment, or conflict and lifts up the head in victory. The safe canonical line is suffering into exaltation, not a forced geographic equation.

7. The Commander and the Armies of Revelation#

Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. —Joshua 5:14, KJV

And his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him... —Revelation 19:13–14, KJV

Before Jericho, Joshua sees a Man with a drawn sword, falls before Him, and is told that the ground is holy. The narrative presents more than a military assistant joining Joshua’s plan. The Commander stands over the campaign, and Joshua must come under His authority. The question is not whether God has come to endorse Israel’s strategy, but whether Israel will obey the Commander of YHWH’s host.

Psalm 110 reveals the enthroned Lord whose enemies become His footstool. Revelation 19 opens heaven and reveals the Faithful and True rider, named the Word of God, followed by the armies of heaven. The canonical progression is coherent: holy ground and drawn sword before Jericho; enthroned Priest-King in the Psalm; conquering Word in the final judgment. Identifying Joshua’s Commander with the eternal Son remains a strong canonical inference, but it is supported by the worship, holy-ground language, divine authority, and final revelation of the Word as heaven’s Commander.

JOSHUA 5: COMMANDER BEFORE JERICHO → PSALM 110: PRIEST-KING ENTHRONED → REVELATION 19: THE WORD LEADS HEAVEN’S ARMIES

8. Revelation 21–22: Peniel and Numbers 6 Become Permanent#

And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. —Revelation 22:4, KJV

And there shall be no more curse... —Revelation 22:3, KJV

Revelation brings the rope to completion. Jacob sees the Face and survives one night. The priests invoke the shining Face and place the Name upon Israel. Zechariah announces the pierced One and the Spirit of grace and supplications. The Gospel reveals the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Revelation says the servants of God and the Lamb will see His Face, bear His Name, and reign for ever and ever.

The temporary and fearful encounter becomes permanent communion. The curse is gone. God dwells with His people. The river of the water of life proceeds from the throne of God and of the Lamb. Night is removed, not merely because a lamp is supplied, but because the Lord God gives them light. The blessing is no longer a word pronounced over pilgrims who may later wander. It becomes the settled order of the new creation.

PENIEL: FACE SEEN AND LIFE PRESERVED → NUMBERS 6: FACE SHINES AND NAME IS PLACED → REVELATION 22: FACE SEEN FOREVER, NAME BORNE FOREVER

9. Peace and Glorification#

The Jordan crossing begins entrance into an earthly inheritance, but it is not yet the final peace. Jericho and many battles remain. Likewise, the peace given through Christ is already real without yet being bodily and creationally complete. Believers are reconciled now, receive the Spirit now, and are preserved by the High Priest now; they still await resurrection, the removal of the curse, and the full liberty of glorified creation.

The pattern therefore moves from inward turning to outward completion. Self-reliance yields to faith. Faith acts according to the Word. God performs what man cannot. The obedient Son passes through death, rises, ascends, pours out the Spirit, and will return in victory. The peace of Numbers 6 reaches its fullness when the servants see the Face, bear the Name, and live under the throne of God and the Lamb where death, sorrow, curse, and night are gone.

10. The Full Circle Back to Jacob and Esau#

Jacob did not understand all that would unfold after him. He did not know the names Jordan baptism, Calvary, resurrection, ascension, Pentecost, or New Jerusalem. Yet he believed the promise was real, the Seed mattered, and blessing could not be separated from the God who gives it. At the decisive point, he clung. His faith was partial in knowledge but real in direction.

Esau represents the contrary direction. He does not merely miss a genealogical privilege. He refuses the dependent walk, treats the holy promise as common, and builds a life in which appetite, strength, bloodline, marriage, grievance, and self-determination replace communion with God. Both brothers are flawed sons of Adam. The difference is not sinless Jacob versus sinful Esau. It is the man brought to cling to the promise versus the man who preserves his own way by despising it.

ESAU: SELF-AUTHORED DESTINY → JACOB: DEPENDENT CLINGING → JESUS: OBEDIENT SON, LAMB, PRIEST-KING, COMMANDER → REDEEMED: FACE, NAME, PEACE, GLORY

Build So Far#

PENIEL: BLESSING + FACE + NAME → JORDAN: SON MANIFESTED + LAMB ANNOUNCED → WILDERNESS: OBEDIENT SON PROVED → ZECHARIAH: GRACE + SUPPLICATION + PIERCED ONE → NUMBERS 6 / PSALM 110: FINAL HIGH-PRIESTLY BLESSING → REVELATION: COMMANDER, FACE, NAME, PEACE, GLORY
