From Above Scripture Instances

From above Where are all of the Old Testament and New Testament combinations of the words FROM ABOVE?

Below is a complete, Scripture-grounded inventory of where “FROM ABOVE” language appears across the Old and New Testaments, grouped by original-language term, with exact verse references. This keeps categories distinct (no flattening), so you can see how the phrase functions covenantally, cosmically, and spiritually.

I. OLD TESTAMENT — HEBREW CONSTRUCTIONS#

The OT does not use a single fixed phrase equivalent to Greek ἄνωθεν, but it repeatedly expresses “from above” through spatial-origin language tied to heaven, authority, blessing, or judgment.

A. מִלְמַעְלָה (milmá‘lah) — from above / upward#

Used for origin or descent from a higher realm.

• Genesis 27:39 “Dew of heaven from above”

• Genesis 49:25 “Blessings of heaven above”

• Exodus 25:20 Cherubim wings overshadowing from above

• Joshua 3:13 Waters standing “in one heap from above”

• Isaiah 45:8 “Drop down, ye heavens, from above”

Pattern: blessing, authority, provision, divine action.

B. מִמָּעַל (mimma‘al) — from above / from over#

Emphasizes source over position, often heavenly.

• Isaiah 45:8 (parallel with milmá‘lah)

• Lamentations 1:13 Fire sent from above

• Ezekiel 1:26 Throne appearance from above

Pattern: judgment, throne, divine initiative.

C. מִן־הַשָּׁמַיִם (min-hashamayim) — from heaven#

Functional equivalent of “from above” as cosmic origin.

• Exodus 16:4 — manna from heaven

• Deuteronomy 26:15

• 1 Kings 18:38 — fire from heaven

• Psalm 14:2

• Daniel 4:31

Pattern: provision, authority, confirmation.

II. NEW TESTAMENT — GREEK CONSTRUCTIONS#

Here the phrase crystallizes.

A. ἄνωθεν (anōthen) — from above / again#

This is the core NT term, meaning origin from God’s realm, not merely repetition.

Gospel of John (thematic center)

• John 3:3 — “born from above”

• John 3:7

• John 3:31 — “He who comes from above”

• John 19:11 — authority from above

Key note: John intentionally allows double meaning (from above / again), but the cosmic-origin sense governs the theology.

General Epistles

• James 1:17 “Every good gift… from above”

• James 3:15 Wisdom not from above

• James 3:17 Wisdom from above

Pattern: origin determines nature.

B. ἐξ ὕψους (ex hypsous) — from on high#

Priestly / prophetic register.

• Luke 1:78 — Dayspring from on high

• Luke 24:49 — power from on high

C. ἀπ᾽ οὐρανοῦ (ap’ ouranou) — from heaven#

• Matthew 21:25

• John 6:32–33

• 1 Corinthians 15:47

III. SYNTHESIS (PEG-READY)#

“FROM ABOVE” in Scripture always answers one question:

Where does authority, life, wisdom, or legitimacy originate?

• OT: God acts downward into creation

• NT: New birth, wisdom, kingship, and power must originate from above

• Jesus: is the one who comes from above — and gives life from above

This is why John 3 and James 3 are not metaphors — they are origin tests.

If you want, next we can:

• Trace “from above” ↔ temple ↔ throne ↔ Spirit

• Map John 3 ↔ James 1 & 3 ↔ Genesis 2
